THE POSITION
The Director of Security is a critical new position that will maintain our organizational security. This person will report to the General Counsel and envision, propose, and implement privacy, protective intelligence, and physical security solutions to advance Freedom Together’s objectives, in collaboration with others, including the Deputy Managing Director, Director of Information Technology, and Facilities and Office Manager, while maintaining and improving on existing systems.
This is an excellent opportunity for a security professional who is eager to have an impact to create a more democratic, inclusive, and sustainable society. The Director of Security will work with staff across Freedom Together to cultivate a culture and network of security awareness and support and manage a variety of consultants.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assessment and Evaluation
- Coordinate and gather data to identify, understand, and address threats to physical security.
Understands the security landscape and seeks opportunities to learn and continuously improve on Freedom Together’s security framework. This includes analyzing needs and requirements, identifying potential problems and gaps, assessing possible solutions, and making recommendations about the best way to move forward.
- Conduct examinations related to physical and privacy security as well as protective intelligence. Lead external research and investigations as needed.
Development, Implementation, and Monitoring
- Develop and implement security and safety standards, policies, and procedures for the organization, and monitor them to ensure compliance;
- Develop, implement, manage, and evaluate policies, protocols, and trainings to protect personnel against harassment, threats, or violence in coordination and collaboration with other organizational managers and in-house counsel.
Strategic and Crisis Planning
- Develop crisis plans and responses in collaboration with senior leadership and others.
- Work closely with the IT Manager to support the overall security and privacy of the organization’s data and systems, including deployment of cyber security trainings and testing and managing the risk assessment and response to cyber security threats.
- Participate in strategic and long-term planning in relation to all security concerns
Training and Coordination
- Communicate and coordinate with public law enforcement and government agencies on security matters as needed.
- Coordinate security staffing and coverage for key organizational personnel and events.
- Maintain knowledge of current developments in security operations and establish a network of relationships with security experts in the space.
- Manage a network of consultants.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Minimum 5 years experience managing security for high-profile organizations, agencies, individuals, and/or events
- Certified Protection Professional (CPP) preferred
- Hands-on cybersecurity experience (e.g. responsibility for elements of an information security program such as vulnerability/risk assessment and management)
- Experience managing the security and infrastructure of a hybrid (or remote) organization
- Experience with crisis planning and management, threat assessment and response, and/or physical security protocols
- Experience with protective intelligence and working to implement privacy solutions
- Experience managing external security vendors across projects
- Experience training others in security related topics and interventions
- Collaborative and excited to work in a team environment with people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives
- Sound judgment and experience managing sensitive and confidential information
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Excellent communication, project management, and problem-solving abilities
- Adaptable and resilient in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Able to work a flexible schedule as needed to assist with security coordination.
SALARY & BENEFITS
This is a full time, exempt position. Freedom Together deeply values fair and equitable wages that enables people to thrive. The salary range for this position is $220,000-$240,000. Freedom Together offers an extensive and generous benefits package including health insurance (with 100% of the premiums paid for employees, spouses, domestic partners, and qualified family members), paid time off (including the last week of the year), 401(k) retirement plan with 12% employer contribution, and access to an inclusive family building reimbursement plan. Freedom Together is based in Manhattan, NY and operates on a hybrid schedule. Staff work from the office 3 days weekly, with the flexibility to work remotely two days weekly.
