Aquarium Educator (PT)
ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Maritime Aquarium’s Education Department leads programs and activities for people of all ages and abilities in classrooms at the Aquarium, at schools, beaches and events throughout the region, on our research vessel and on the Aquarium floor. This talented and knowledgeable team is seeking new members who are passionate about the natural world, education and aquariums.
Our dynamic programming means that a variety of skills and educational background can be leveraged for this position including experience working with children and/or individuals or groups with special needs, Spanish language fluency, public speaking, boating experience, field-related certifications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Teach programs and facilitate hands-on STEM and science activities, tours, and experiences for school groups, camps, and scouts. Student ages may range from preschool through college. Programs may take place at the Aquarium, offsite at schools and other venues, outdoors, and online.
- Facilitate educational experiences with Aquarium guests that are built around our animals and conservation messaging
- Lead fun and informative programming as part of Summer Camp and/or after-school series
- Prepare for programs by reviewing outlines and curriculum in advance, organizing and packing materials, and following animal handling protocols
- Complete administrative tasks associated with programs in a timely manner
- Participate in department trainings and professional development

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- College degree in a related field, or equivalent work experience
- Experience working with children in an educational setting and eagerness for working with people of various backgrounds and ages
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm
- Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of local marine flora, fauna, and natural history
- A current driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Teaching experience preferred
- Spanish language fluency a plus
- Ability to lift and maneuver materials up to 60 lbs. in weight
- Boating experience, preferably as crew or educator
