Field Research Technician
ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Conservation team works across Connecticut and New York on field ecology projects related to the health of Long Island Sound. Research projects include beach surveys for horseshoe crabs, salt marsh surveys and experiments, and boat-based marine debris retrieval. The Field Research Technician is a temporary position that assists field research activities across the department’s full project portfolio.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct field research, data collection
- Assist with preparation and organization of field equipment
- Assist with laboratory processing of field samples
- Support Conservation staff on overall program implementation as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
Skills and Experience
- Experience assisting with field research and collecting field data required
- Experience/interest in coastal ecology or related fields is required
- Undergraduate degree in biology, ecology, or a related field required
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail required
Position Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older to apply
- Must be able to provide their own transportation to field sites across Connecticut and New York.
- Reimbursement for mileage driven from the Aquarium to field sites (in excess of a commute to The Maritime Aquarium) will be provided (based on the current IRS reimbursement rate)
- Must be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions, including on boats and in mud, while maintaining a can-do attitude
- Must be able to work collaboratively, work independently, and multi-task
- Must be able to carry 35+ pounds over uneven terrain during field research
Salary: $20 per hour
Start Date: May 1, 2026
End Date: October 31, 2026
Schedule: This is a temporary position. Hours will be variable depending on the fieldwork schedule and timing of low tide, with an average of 20-30 hours per week. Early morning and some evening work will be required for fieldwork and other department activities (with advance notice).
