Direct Response Writer & Creative Lead
Who are we?
The Motley Fool is a purpose-driven financial services company on a mission to make the world smarter, happier, and richer. For 30 years we've been helping people take control of their financial futures—through transparency, education, and a healthy dose of Foolishness. We're a fast-moving, collaborative team that values high-quality work, curiosity, and initiative. We care deeply about what we do, and we're driven by the impact our work has on real people's lives.
What does this team do?
Our Back-End Direct Response team is responsible for some of the highest-stakes copy at The Motley Fool. We write for a specific kind of reader: the experienced investor with a serious portfolio—typically $500K or more in investable assets—who's already paying for our products and is hungry for the next great opportunity. These are not people who need convincing that investing matters. They need to be convinced that this opportunity is the one they can't afford to miss.
The team produces the long-form, premium content that drives upgrades into our highest-tier products: think hour-long Video Sales Letters, 5,000–8,000-word order pages, and week-long email campaigns. The bar is high—and so is the upside.
What would you do in this role?
We’re looking for a senior Direct Response Writer & Creative Lead to own the full arc of back-end upgrade campaigns—from Big Idea → positioning → execution → iteration.
This is not a “fill in the brief” role. You’ll be expected to:
- Generate original campaign concepts
- Identify compelling market narratives
- Shape how we position opportunities to our most engaged members
You’ll work closely with investment analysts, marketers, and creative partners to bring those ideas to life across channels.
Success in this role comes down to one thing: Do your ideas and campaigns drive action?
Here’s more on what you’ll be doing:
- Developing Campaign Concepts (Big Ideas): Identifying timely market narratives and translating them into compelling campaign angles, often before they’re formally scoped.
- Writing Conversion-Focused Copy: Crafting high-performing emails, landing pages, VSL scripts, and long-form sales experiences that guide members toward upgrade decisions.
- Building Multi-Touch Campaigns: Developing sequences that build momentum, urgency, and conviction over time.
- Owning the Testing Loop: Proposing variations, analyzing results, and iterating to improve performance and beat control.
- Collaborating Cross-Functionally: Partnering with analysts, product, design, and compliance to refine messaging and bring campaigns to life.
- Using AI as a Force Multiplier: Leveraging AI tools for research, ideation, drafting, and iteration—while owning the strategy, voice, and final output.
What do you need to apply?
- 5+ years of experience writing direct response financial services copy
- You understand the experienced investor mindset: You know how to speak to someone already in the market who’s evaluating their next move—not someone just getting started.
- You’re fluent in financial narratives: You follow markets, understand what drives investor behavior, and can translate complex ideas into compelling opportunities.
- You think in Big Ideas: You can take a broad theme—AI disruption, energy transition, biotech breakthroughs—and find the angle that makes it feel urgent and investable.
- You’re performance-driven: You care deeply about results and continuously look for ways to improve them.
- You’re data-fluent: You can interpret performance signals, form hypotheses, and apply learnings to future campaigns.
- You embrace AI: You see it as a tool to expand your thinking and increase your output. You're genuinely curious about how it can make your work bigger than what any one writer could pull off alone.
- You’re highly collaborative: You share ideas openly, give thoughtful feedback, and elevate the work of the team around you.
The successful candidate will be able to provide:
- Writing samples that demonstrate long-form persuasion at scale—ideally a VSL script, order page, or multi-email campaign.
- Evidence of financial markets knowledge—whether through your copy, your background, or both.
- A willingness to work in an AI-assisted environment where the goal is output quality and conversion, not word count.
