Our team manages complex building systems, campus infrastructure, and capital improvements across a highly dynamic environment that welcomes millions of guests each year. From critical mechanical and electrical systems to large-scale renovation and sustainability initiatives, Facilities ensures the Museum remains safe, operational, and ready to deliver inspiring science experiences every day.
The Electrical Systems Technician II plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Museum’s electrical infrastructure and related building systems. This role supports the Facilities team by diagnosing system issues, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, and coordinating contractor work to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for staff, guests, and animals across the Museum’s complex campus.
What You’ll Accomplish
- Maintain and Optimize Critical Electrical Infrastructure: Independently monitor, diagnose, repair, and optimize building electrical systems—including switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, distribution panels, motor controls, and life safety systems—to ensure safe and reliable operation across the Museum’s 750,000 square feet of facilities.
- Lead Complex Electrical Troubleshooting and Repairs: Diagnose complex electrical and controls-related problems using technical drawings, schematics, diagnostic equipment, and system data. Develop and implement corrective actions, identify root causes, and recommend longer-term improvements that increase system reliability and reduce recurring failures.
- Execute and Improve Preventative Maintenance: Perform advanced preventative and corrective maintenance on electrical and related building systems. Identify equipment deficiencies, emerging issues, and opportunities to improve maintenance practices, equipment performance, safety, and reliability.
- Support Continuous Facility Operations: Monitor critical infrastructure, conduct system rounds, respond independently to operational issues, and support electrical shutdowns, equipment replacements, system modifications, and other planned or emergency work affecting Museum operations.
- Provide Technical Leadership and Contractor Oversight: Serve as a technical resource to Facilities staff and provide guidance to less-experienced technicians when appropriate. Coordinate and oversee contractors performing electrical work, verify work quality and compliance with Museum standards, and assist with planning and execution of electrical projects.
- Lead Response to Electrical Emergencies and Critical Incidents: Provide advanced technical response during power failures, fire alarms, equipment failures, and other critical incidents. Assess system conditions, implement appropriate corrective actions, communicate technical findings, and support the safe restoration of building operations.
What We’re Looking For (Competencies)
- Advanced Electrical Systems Expertise: Strong working knowledge of commercial/institutional electrical distribution systems up to 480V, including switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, generators, UPS systems, automatic transfer switches, and associated controls.
- Advanced Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose complex electrical and building system problems, interpret schematics and technical documentation, determine root causes, and implement effective corrective actions.
- Technical Judgment & Ownership: Ability to evaluate system conditions, prioritize work based on operational and safety impacts, make sound technical recommendations, and take ownership of issues through resolution.
- Operational Reliability & Continuous Improvement: Anticipates potential equipment and system failures through preventative maintenance, inspections, and system monitoring and identifies opportunities to improve reliability, maintainability, and performance.
- Collaboration & Technical Leadership: Works effectively across Facilities trades and with contractors while serving as a technical resource and sharing knowledge with other technicians.
- Safety & Compliance: Demonstrates strong knowledge of electrical safety practices, applicable codes, life safety requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe work practices within an occupied institutional facility.
Technical Tools & Systems Knowledge
Required:
- Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician License
- Advanced experience maintaining and troubleshooting commercial or institutional electrical distribution systems up to 480V
- Demonstrated experience with switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, automatic transfer switches, motor controls, and fire/life safety systems
- Ability to independently read and interpret one-line diagrams, technical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment documentation
- Demonstrated ability to use electrical testing and diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot complex system problems
- Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and safe electrical work practices
- Ability to coordinate electrical work with other trades and outside contractors
Preferred:
- Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS)
- Experience with Johnson Controls Metasys or similar building control systems
- Knowledge of HVAC, mechanical, and life safety systems
- Experience supporting electrical shutdowns, generator testing, emergency power systems, or major electrical projects
- Experience providing technical guidance or mentoring to other technicians
Education and Experience
- Education: Post-secondary electrician training, apprenticeship program, or equivalent technical education required.
- Experience:Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible electrical experience, preferably maintaining complex commercial, institutional, industrial, healthcare, educational, or similar facilities.

Salary Range
$36 - $45.90 USD
