Senior Video Journalist, News & Enterprise
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
The New York Times Video department is seeking a Senior Video Journalist to report and produce video stories in a range of formats, from short-form videos to visual articles and multimedia interactives. You have experience responding to high-stakes news events, and delivering video and multimedia stories.
You are an experienced reporter, capable of working independently and decisively. We are looking for an idea generator, who’s constantly pitching stories and developing sources, as well as someone with impeccable news instincts, ethics and judgement who thrives at finding scoops and advancing the story. You are a confident reporter in a newsroom setting, occasionally in the field. You should be eager to collaborate with other journalists and feature them on-camera.
The ideal candidate has a background in digital journalism, producing video short-form news reports in the 1-5 minute range for a largely mobile audience. Please note, this is not an entry-level position and it is not a position for someone who is interested in producing documentaries.
You are a world-class visual storyteller who works with urgency and wants to make an impact. You are someone who can take initiative on major stories and develop enterprising or exclusive angles.
This is a hybrid position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:
- Expertly and independently carry out all aspects of video production, including research, reporting, writing, shooting, producing, editing and publishing.
- Consistently pitch coverage opportunities, and help manage big projects in a range of formats, including linear videos and interactives, and overseeing the work of others as needed.
- Respond to breaking news events, and producing original video stories, both remotely and in the field.
- Use wire services, on the ground sources, social media and other open source tools to find and verify newsworthy video footage.
- Set up and monitor live video feeds, as needed.
- Produce high-quality video journalism quickly and independently, while also guiding and mentoring more junior staff members as they develop and report original story ideas.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- This role reports to a Senior Producer, Video.
Basic Qualifications:
- 8+ years of journalism experience in a digital video or broadcast newsroom.
- Extensive professional experience in all aspects of the video production process, including strong writing and reporting skills.
- Expert working knowledge of domestic and international news events, with a proven track record covering breaking news around the world.
- Experience reporting and producing video in complex news environments, such as conflict zones or other hostile environments, under the pressure of tight deadlines in the field.
- Strong editorial judgment and writing skills, with a passion for finding original, visual journalism opportunities in competitive news moments.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to supervise other video journalists and schedules, direct field crews, and hire and manage freelancers when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Canon video camera systems and the ability to shoot video in the field and in-studio.
- The ability to edit quickly and accurately with Adobe Premiere Pro.
- Experience with UGC verification and/or foreign language skills.
- A broad network of well-placed story sources and production contacts, both in the U.S. and internationally.
- General knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for third-party and acquired visuals, and the ability to find exclusive images to help drive our reporting.
- Willingness and flexibility to travel on short notice, and also work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple assignments at a time.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others, including, often, correspondents in the field.
