The New York Times is looking for a versatile editor for the Styles desk to ensure the department's stories follow Times style and standards while keeping in mind our goals of delighting and entertaining readers. The editor will be line editing, copy editing and fact checking multiple stories per week, including news and features. You will also have opportunities to work directly with reporters and assigning editors on story shaping for a variety of digital formats. You have strong attention to detail, an understanding of deadlines and priorities and a collaborative spirit.
This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:

Be a reliable second editor for multiple stories per week – be thoroughly knowledgeable about Times style and standards

Edit a vast range of material from the reader's perspective for accuracy, grammar, comprehension and readability

Under the guidance of their manager, help to set up and optimize editorial workflows.

Conceive of and pitch fresh story ideas to the desk editor – keep diversity of voices and the types of stories our desk tells top of mind

Write and edit engaging display copy that upholds the Styles desk's voice and tone

Collaborate with visual editors and make sure they have the information needed to assign and place appropriate art

Assign, shape and edit features, developed with staff or freelance writers

Understand and maintain the ethical standards of The Times in all published material, which includes working with our Standards and Legal departments

Perform any tasks necessary related to the fine details of publication

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:
-
3 + years as a digital editor for a news organization or lifestyle publication
-
Excellent communication and organizational skills
-
Experience copy editing and fact checking in a deadline driven environment

Wit and creativity
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Interest in the breadth of subjects covered by Styles, including on and offline trends, fashion, public figures, relationships and more

Experience creating editorial workflows, using Airtable or other project management tools and content management systems

A track record of producing fresh story ideas

Willingness to learn and adapt as The Times develops new story formats

The hourly rate of base pay for this role is:
$62.61 - $63.19 USD
