Senior Product Marketing Manager, The Athletic

New York, NY

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is hiring a collaborative Senior Product Marketing Manager for The Athletic. Reporting to the Director of Product Marketing, you will combine strategic product partnership with go-to-market leadership for priority Athletic products, features, and experiences.

In this role, you will bring market insights directly into product development by transforming customer needs, marketplace dynamics, and behavioral data into relevant recommendations. You will partner with product teams from discovery and strategy through launch and measurement, helping the team build experiences that support acquisition, engagement, and retention.

You will also lead go-to-market strategies for major launches and product updates working with Product, Marketing, Research, Editorial, Creative and other teams. You will define positioning, develop messaging, align team members, and ensure launches reach the right audiences with the right value proposition.

This role sits at the intersection of customer insight, product strategy, positioning, launch planning, and performance measurement. You are comfortable operating in ambiguity, influencing without authority, and making complex ideas clear. You are a hands-on builder yourself who enjoys building prototypes to help get your ideas across. You have direct experience scaling adoption and habituation with apps.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner directly with Product teams to represent customer and market perspectives in planning, prioritization, and roadmap decisions.

  • Use research and data to identify customer needs, prioritize use cases, and uncover market opportunities for Athletic products and experiences.

  • Lead end-to-end go-to-market strategy and execute major product launches by defining positioning, messaging, audience strategy, creative briefs, channel plans, and enablement materials.

  • Translate complex product capabilities into compelling customer benefits and clear value propositions tailored for sports fans.

  • Collaborate with Growth Marketing and Product teams to uncover opportunities across the entire user journey (acquisition, activation, onboarding, engagement, conversion, upsell, and retention).

  • Define success metrics, analyze post-launch performance, and establish feedback loops to inform future product and marketing strategy.

  • Build clear narratives, frameworks, and presentations that align partners around customer needs, product strategy, and project impact.

  • Foster trusted relationships across the organization by bringing structure to complex programs, facilitating productive discussions, and sharing best practices to improve product marketing standards.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Director of Product Marketing, The Athletic

Basic Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of product marketing experience with an understanding of product-led growth concepts that impact acquisition, activation, engagement, and retention.

  • Expertise in go-to-market strategy, lifecycle marketing across owned and paid channels, and planning, testing, and shipping features for B2C subscription apps.

  • Experience using customer research, audience insights, competitive intelligence, and analytics tools to inform positioning, value propositions, and messaging strategies.

  • Experience partnering with Product, Data, Tech, and Research teams to influence roadmap decisions, run test-and-learn agendas, and measure outcomes.

  • Clear and engaging communication, with the ability to tailor complex information to a range of audiences.

  • An interest in sports and an understanding of how fans discover, follow, and engage with sports coverage.

  • Desire to operate both autonomously and collaboratively, with curiosity about identifying and forging new opportunities.
