Principal IoT Integration Engineer
The Nuclear Company is the fastest growing startup in the nuclear and energy space creating a never before seen fleet-scale approach to building nuclear reactors. Through its design-once, build-many approach and coalition building across communities, regulators, and financial stakeholders, The Nuclear Company is committed to delivering safe and reliable electricity at the lowest cost, while catalyzing the nuclear industry toward rapid development in America and globally.
About the role:
The IoT Integration Engineer will design and implement intelligent, real-time sensor networks that extend across our nuclear infrastructure—on the ground and in the air. Your systems will enable live monitoring, predictive maintenance, augmented construction oversight, and enhanced operational awareness.
You’ll work at the frontier of industrial IoT, integrating edge sensors, drone systems, wearables, and immersive technologies like VR/AR and heads-up displays (HUDs) to unify the physical and digital environments in which our reactors are designed, built, and operated.
This role reports into the VP, Software Engineering, Head of Nuclear OS.
Responsibilities:
IoT Architecture & Deployment
- Design and implement robust IoT sensor networks (e.g., pressure, radiation, vibration, environmental conditions).
- Integrate telemetry data from mobile and airborne platforms such as drones for visual inspection and sensor coverage.
- Build secure pipelines for real-time data collection, edge processing, and centralized analytics.
Spatial & Immersive Interfaces
- Collaborate with software and UX teams to stream real-time sensor data to AR/VR interfaces and HUDs for on-site personnel.
- Support development of augmented work instructions, live system overlays, and spatially aware alerts for maintenance and operations.
Predictive & Preventive Systems
- Create models for anomaly detection and predictive maintenance using telemetry and historical data.
- Enable real-time operational diagnostics by fusing sensor data across platforms and environments.
Security, Standards & Reliability
- Ensure sensor systems meet high standards of cybersecurity, redundancy, and regulatory compliance.
- Support documentation, diagnostics, and monitoring tools for long-term system resilience.
R&D and Innovation
- Explore and prototype novel IoT and extended reality (XR) technologies applicable to construction and nuclear plant operations.
- Contribute to pilot projects deploying sensorized drones, AR-assisted workflows, and mixed-reality training environments.
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 5+ years in IoT engineering, embedded systems, or industrial telemetry networks.
- Experience deploying and operating drone-based inspection platforms (UAS) and integrating their data streams.
- Familiarity with AR/VR systems (e.g., Hololens, Meta Quest, Unity, Unreal Engine) or HUD devices.
- Proficiency with cloud IoT platforms (AWS IoT Core, Azure IoT Hub, or GCP IoT), Python, and real-time databases.
- Strong systems thinking and spatial awareness.
- Effective communicator in cross-disciplinary teams, including construction, field operations, and software.
- Innovative mindset with a focus on practical deployment and operator usability.
Benefits:
- Competitive compensation packages
- 401k with company match
- Medical, dental, vision plans
- Generous vacation policy, plus holidays
- Annual company retreats
