About the role

The Traveling Rotating Equipment Specialist – Pump Mechanic (Nuclear) is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and overhauling safety-related and balance-of-plant pumps within nuclear power facilities. This role supports scheduled refueling outages and forced maintenance events across the United States, ensuring the reliability and performance of critical rotating equipment. The position requires strong mechanical expertise, precision measurement skills, and strict adherence to nuclear safety, quality assurance, and outage work procedures.

PROJECT-BASED TRAVEL ROLE: This position is not based in Columbia, SC. We are collecting applications for professionals willing to travel to nuclear power plant sites nationwide as outage and project work becomes available. Work will take place at nuclear facilities across the United States as projects are awarded, and roles will be activated as project staffing needs are confirmed.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to nuclear generating stations to support scheduled refueling outages and maintenance activities.
  • Overhaul safety-related and balance-of-plant pumps including RHR, CCW, Service Water, Charging, Condensate, and Feedwater systems.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair, and rebuild vertical and horizontal centrifugal pumps in accordance with OEM specifications.
  • Perform precision measurements of shafts, sleeves, wear rings, and bearing fits to verify tolerances and component condition.
  • Install, set, and verify mechanical seals during pump rebuild activities.
  • Perform pump-to-motor laser alignment and verify proper coupling installation.
  • Conduct runout checks, soft foot corrections, and coupling inspections to ensure proper rotating equipment operation.
  • Troubleshoot vibration, seal failures, and pump performance issues during outage maintenance.
  • Interpret pump curves, mechanical drawings, and OEM technical manuals to guide repair and maintenance work.
  • Complete required QA documentation and work package records in accordance with nuclear industry standards.
  • Maintain strict Foreign Material Exclusion (FME) practices and comply with radiological control requirements.

Experience / Required Qualifications 

  • Journeyman Millwright or Industrial Mechanic certification, or equivalent hands-on mechanical experience.
  • Extensive experience performing maintenance, inspection, and rebuilds of rotating equipment and industrial pumps.
  • Demonstrated experience installing and setting mechanical seals during pump overhaul activities.
  • Proficiency performing laser alignment on pump-to-motor or rotating equipment assemblies.
  • Strong understanding of pump hydraulics, pump curves, and rotating equipment performance principles.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively to nuclear generating stations to support outage schedules.

Experience – Nice to Have

  • Prior experience performing pump maintenance in nuclear power plants.
  • Vibration Analysis Certification (Level I or higher).
  • Experience working on safety-related or critical plant systems.
  • Rigging certification or experience supporting heavy equipment lifts.
