About the role
The Traveling Turbine Millwright (Fossil & Combined Cycle) supports the inspection, maintenance, and overhaul of steam and gas turbines at coal-fired and combined cycle power plants across the United States. This role participates in combustion inspections (CI), hot gas path (HGP) work, and major turbine outages, performing precision mechanical work on critical rotating equipment. The position requires strong millwright skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and efficiently in demanding outage environments.
PROJECT-BASED TRAVEL ROLE: This position is not based in Columbia, SC. We are collecting applications for professionals willing to travel to nuclear power plant sites nationwide as outage and project work becomes available. Work will take place at nuclear facilities across the United States as projects are awarded, and roles will be activated as project staffing needs are confirmed.
Responsibilities
- Travel to fossil fuel and combined cycle power plants to support scheduled outages and turbine maintenance activities.
- Disassemble, inspect, repair, and rebuild steam turbine components including high-pressure (HP), intermediate-pressure (IP), and low-pressure (LP) sections.
- Inspect and maintain gas turbine components including combustion sections, rotors, buckets, and vanes.
- Perform laser alignment of turbine-generator units to ensure proper rotating equipment alignment and performance.
- Measure and set bearing clearances, seal tolerances, and other critical mechanical fits during turbine assembly and maintenance.
- Install and inspect couplings, bearings, and turbine auxiliary components.
- Support inspection and maintenance of turbine valves and auxiliary systems associated with turbine operation.
- Execute heavy rigging operations to safely lift and position large turbine components during outage work.
- Interpret OEM technical manuals and specifications from manufacturers such as GE, Siemens, and Mitsubishi to guide maintenance and overhaul activities.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment while adhering to site safety procedures and outage work requirements.
Experience / Required Qualifications
- Journeyman Millwright certification or equivalent industrial mechanical experience
- Demonstrated experience supporting steam and/or gas turbine outages in power generation environments.
- Strong precision measurement and alignment skills including laser alignment, dial indicators, and clearance verification.
- Experience performing turbine disassembly, inspection, and rebuild activities during outages.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively to support outage schedules nationwide.
Experience – Nice to Have
- Experience working at fossil fuel, combined cycle, or nuclear power generation facilities.
- Vibration Analysis Certification (Level I or higher).
- Experience supporting turbine valve inspections or auxiliary system maintenance
- Rigging certification or experience performing heavy lifts of turbine components.
- Familiarity with OEM turbine equipment from manufacturers such as GE, Siemens, or Mitsubishi.
