About the role

We’re hiring a Compliance Manager to own legal and regulatory compliance for a new company operating in one of the most highly regulated industries in the world. You will be the first dedicated compliance hire within the Legal team, responsible for ensuring that how we develop, finance, build, and operate nuclear projects meets the requirements of regulators, investors, and the law.

This role sits at the intersection of legal judgment and practical business partnership. You will interpret complex regulatory requirements, translate them into clear guidance for engineers, project leaders, and executives, and help the company move quickly without compromising on safety, integrity, or accountability. You will also serve as a key point of contact for the compliance expectations of both The Nuclear Company and Brookfield.

Responsibilities

  • Advise leadership on legal and regulatory obligations across the nuclear project lifecycle, including siting, licensing, development, construction, and operations
  • Monitor and interpret requirements under the Atomic Energy Act, NRC regulations (including 10 CFR), Department of Energy requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local laws
  • Manage compliance with export controls and nuclear technology transfer rules, including 10 CFR Part 810, EAR, ITAR, and sanctions, as well as foreign ownership, control, or influence (FOCI) considerations
  • Support facility and personnel security obligations, including security clearances, safeguards information, and controlled unclassified information
  • Oversee anti-bribery and anti-corruption compliance, including the FCPA, and conduct risk-based due diligence on partners, suppliers, and agents
  • Ensure compliance with government contracting, procurement, and grant or loan program requirements, including conflict-of-interest and gift and entertainment rules
  • Administer the company’s code of conduct, ethics and whistleblower channels, and conflict-of-interest processes, and investigate or coordinate the response to reported concerns
  • Provide practical training and guidance to employees, tailored to technical and project audiences
  • Coordinate with outside counsel, regulators, auditors, and investors on compliance matters, inquiries, and audits
  • Review contracts and commercial agreements for compliance-related terms, working closely with the Legal team
  • Report to senior leadership and the board on compliance risks, trends, and remediation

Experience

  • J.D. and active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • 8+ years of legal or compliance experience, including time at a law firm, in-house legal department, or regulator
  • Experience in regulated, safety-critical, or government-facing industries such as nuclear, energy, utilities, defense, aerospace, or infrastructure
  • Working knowledge of at least several of the following: NRC regulatory framework, export controls and sanctions, FCPA and anti-corruption, FOCI, government contracting, or ethics and conflict-of-interest compliance
  • Ability to interpret complex regulations and give clear, pragmatic advice to non-lawyers
  • Sound judgment and the confidence to say no, and to explain why, to senior stakeholders
  • Comfort with ambiguity, speed, and shifting priorities in a startup environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Experience

  • Direct experience in the nuclear industry, including with the NRC, DOE, a reactor vendor, utility, or national laboratory
  • Experience at or alongside a joint venture, or a company backed by institutional investors or private equity
  • Experience with large capital projects, EPC contracting, or project finance
  • Familiarity with international nuclear regimes, including IAEA safeguards and nonproliferation requirements
  • Experience with government investigations, voluntary disclosures, or regulatory enforcement matters
