JOB PURPOSE AND SUMMARY:

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist plays a critical role in supporting physicians by performing diagnostic imaging procedures to assess organ function and detect potential abnormalities. This includes conducting body and organ scans using radiopharmaceuticals and ensuring accurate administration and documentation of isotope dosages in line with established protocols. The technologist closely monitors patients throughout the procedure, promptly identifying and reporting any irregularities or adverse reactions to ensure patient safety and the highest quality of care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Live and exemplify TOI core values, providing outstanding customer service and promoting a positive experience for patients and staff members.
  • Collect relevant patient history, such as allergies or previous surgeries, which could affect the imaging process.
  • Educates patients about the nuclear medicine procedures, addressing any concerns and ensuring they understand the process.
  • Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals for use in both diagnostic studies and therapeutic treatments.
  • Creates and enhances diagnostic images using a variety of imaging equipment and tools.
  • Collects biologic specimens and prepares data for interpretation by physicians.
  • Follows radiation safety guidelines and documents radiopharmaceutical usage for regulatory compliance.
  • Perform imaging procedures like Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), or other nuclear medicine imaging methods to capture images of organs, tissues, or tumors
  • Ensure that radiation doses are within safe limits and document them accurately.
  • Safely inject, ingest, or apply radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive substances) to patients as directed by physicians, ensuring proper dosages and procedures.
  • After imaging procedures, monitor patients for any immediate side effects, reactions, or issues related to radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Adhere to all relevant healthcare regulations and ethical standards for patient care, radiation safety, and documentation.
  • Assist the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) with the radiation safety procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understand the principles of radiation, radioactive decay, and the interaction of radiation with the human body.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, to communicate effectively with physicians, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Proficiency in using complex imaging technologies like PET/CT, SPECT, and gamma cameras to capture high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Ability to help patients feel comfortable and at ease, particularly those who may be anxious about the procedures or unfamiliar with nuclear medicine.
  • Accuracy in recording patient data, imaging results, and radiopharmaceutical doses to maintain detailed medical records.
  • Capability to manage multiple patients, maintain organized schedules, and prioritize tasks effectively, especially in a busy oncology clinic environment.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with equipment, imaging quality, or patient preparation, and to resolve them promptly.
  • Propensity to make quick, informed decisions in response to unexpected situations (e.g., adverse reactions, equipment malfunctions).
  • Willingness to learn new techniques or technologies as the field of nuclear medicine evolves.
  • Experience with Pluvicto preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or a Chinese dialect preferred, not required.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING:

  • Nuclear Medicine bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Certified Technologist, Nuclear Medicine (CTNM) required
    • Either ARRT or NMTCB certified, per the State of California, to meet CTNM requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING REQUIREMENTS:

The position involves prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, extensive computer use, and phone interaction. Additionally, the role may require occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds for office supplies or equipment.
