Technical Recruiter
Thinking Machines Lab's mission is to empower humanity through advancing collaborative general intelligence. We're building a future where everyone has access to the knowledge and tools to make AI work for their unique needs and goals.
We are a small team of scientists, engineers, and builders who've created some of the most widely used AI products, like ChatGPT, Character.ai, Mistral, PyTorch, OpenAI Gym, Fairseq, and Segment Anything.
What You’ll Do
- Develop a plan for recruiting the best infrastructure engineers, machine learning researchers, and other roles.
- Build our talent pipeline strategy, including outreach, events, and building networks across industry and academia.
- Proactively reach out to candidates, including those with non-standard backgrounds through non-obvious channels.
- Design our interview process, from CV screening to planning interview loops and debriefing.
- Negotiate offers, coordinate with leadership, and make sure we close hiring loops fast.
- Establish our brand as an employer, making sure our career page, job descriptions, and contact with candidates communicates clearly who we are.
- Advise the rest of the team on the industry-wide market for talent, the scarcities and opportunities it presents.
This role is flexible and designed to evolve. We want you to focus on your strengths and prioritize what really matters for hiring the best technical talent for Thinking Machines Lab.
Skills and Qualifications
We believe that identifying talented contributors is a skill that can be learned and employed in many situations, not just in previous work as a technical recruiter. You might demonstrate that you have it if you:
- Closed hard-to-hire talent in the AI industry, whether as a recruiter or manager.
- Led bootcamps, conferences, industry events, or open source projects that helped advance people and relied on collective contributions.
- Have direct experience in ML engineering and research. Can read papers, evaluate GitHub repos, and discuss technical topics with credibility.
- Built internal processes from scratch, including integration with tools, dashboards to track metrics, and systems for coordination.
- Have a strong network and reputation in the AI industry or adjacent fields.
- Communicate warmly and to the point in writing and in conversation.
You’ll Thrive in This Role if
- You love thinking about talent: what’s overrated and underrated, what do the best people care about, how trust is built in a fast-moving industry.
- You have a generalist mindset — you’re energized by variety and challenge.
- You enjoyed working in small and growing companies where speed and autonomy are prized.
- You understand what sets Thinking Machines Labs apart and feel that you’re aligned with that in particular.
Logistics
- Location: This role is based in San Francisco, California.
- Compensation: Depending on background, skills and experience, the expected annual salary range for this position is $175,000 – $240,000 USD.
- Visa sponsorship: We sponsor visas. While we can't guarantee success for every candidate or role, if you're the right fit, we're committed to working through the visa process together.
- Benefits: Thinking Machines offers generous health, dental, and vision benefits, unlimited PTO, paid parental leave, and relocation support as needed.
- As set forth in Thinking Machines' Equal Employment Opportunity policy, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected group status under any applicable law.
