Lead Newsroom Analyst, The Verge

New York, New York

The Verge is seeking a Lead Newsroom Analyst to sit at the intersection of journalism, product, and data, driving the insights that shape how we cover stories, grow our subscriber base, and build better products. They will be accountable for turning performance data into editorial strategy, supporting the planning and optimization of our subscription and paywall programs, and serving as the primary analytics partner for product initiatives across The Verge's digital properties. We are seeking someone who is equally at home in a story pitch meeting and a Looker dashboard and writing SQL in BigQuery, with a strong instinct for what data can and can't tell you, and the editorial judgment to bridge the gap.

This role sits at the center of The Verge's most critical growth priorities, working closely with editors, audience development, product, and business leadership. The ideal candidate is equal parts analyst, strategist, and collaborator, someone who can design a rigorous paywall test, present revenue projections to leadership, and still walk into a desk meeting with a sharp point of view on what stories we should be chasing and why.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Editorial Strategy & Performance

  • Work with editors and writers across desks on content planning—especially for tentpole events, editorial packages, and trending topics—by leveraging historical performance data and a deep understanding of The Verge's voice.
  • Identify coverage gaps, audience curiosities, and emerging interest areas by monitoring story traffic and conversions. Use this data to pitch editors news hits and follow-ups, with suggestions for framing, timing, and format.
  • Lead and design regular strategy meetings with editorial leadership to review article performance, audience trends, and conversion data. Embed in desks and partner with editors to implement changes based on these reviews, and track outcomes to inform future decision-making.
  • Provide regular, accessible reporting analyses to leadership that address KPIs across audience segments, story formats, topics, and desk-level performance.
  • Support editorial with ad-hoc analyses and performance data to guide strategy.

Subscriptions & Premium Strategy

  • Maintain revenue models to support subscription planning, forecasting, and growth initiatives—translating data into actionable financial projections for leadership.
  • Use data to support the planning and launch of new premium products for The Verge's subscription program.
  • Own paywall strategy analytics end-to-end: design and track paywall tests across multiple data sources, interpret results, and provide recommendations for implementation and optimization.
  • Help optimize paywall strategy by identifying and supporting high-conversion opportunities within editorial coverage.
  • Balance funnel priorities, balancing free news acquisition strategy with subscription goals.

Product Analytics

  • Serve as the primary analytics partner for product initiatives, owning instrumentation, reporting, and insight generation across The Verge's digital products.
  • Define and track product KPIs, building dashboards and writing custom SQL to monitor engagement, retention, and monetization metrics.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering on experiment design, A/B test analysis, and data-driven decision-making for features and editorial UX improvements.
  • Translate complex product data into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.

Off-Platform and Product Strategy

  • Partner with the audience team to sharpen general off-platform distribution strategy.
  • Refine The Verge's Apple News strategy—developing strong pitches, analyzing News+ performance, and identifying areas for growth.
  • Support The Verge's newsletter program, identifying opportunities to expand recurring and popup newsletters to improve subscriber growth and retention.
  • Work with Product on editorial experiments, such as quick posts, homepage engagement tests, or content presentation optimizations.
