Software Backend Engineer (m/f/d) - Berlin

TIER Mobility is Europe’s leading shared micro-mobility provider, with a mission to Change Mobility for Good. Recently we have closed a financial transaction to merge with Dott. Together we create the European champion of shared micro-mobility, with revenues of €250m, supporting over 125M trips a year in more than 20 countries. Following this closing, teams across TIER and Dott will be progressively integrated. There has never been a more exciting time to join this ride!

Full-time - Hybrid position (at least 3 days on-site)

As a Backend Engineer on the Fleet Team, you build and maintain services that ensure seamless connectivity between our vehicles and the backend system, enabling reliable data flow and effective vehicle management. The Fleet Team plays a pivotal role in maintaining the connectivity and performance of the already connected vehicles and integrating new types of IoT devices into the system.

The team collaborates closely with external stakeholders, including vehicle manufacturers and data connectivity providers, to maintain robust operations. Additionally, the Fleet team works in partnership with internal teams to ensure alignment on technical solutions and strategic goals, driving continuous improvement in-vehicle connectivity and system performance.

What you’ll do

  1. Develop our Tier & Dott Typescript/Node.js backend applications in close collaboration with your team of Software Engineers, Engineering Manager and Product Manager, participating in all aspects of the software development lifecycle
  2. Ensure stability and scalability of our services by a consistent application of clean architecture and industry best practices
  3. Deploy and monitor the health of your applications in production, debugging and mitigating issues as they arise, communicating with stakeholders to align priorities, escalate impediments and inform them of progress
  4. Identify technical opportunities that improve vehicle connectivity and system performance, contributing to the Fleet team’s operational excellence
  5. Help in onboarding new connectivity partners and troubleshooting technical issues that may arise during integration

What you’ll need

  1. Passion for technology and Software Engineering, with a drive to improve continuously
  2. Working experience:  2-3 years developing distributed backend applications
  3. User centricity - demonstrated ability to identify and truly grasp user problems, building effective and scalable solutions
  4. Critical thinking - observability mindset, strong ability to reflect on own and team performance, data-driven approach
  5. Effectiveness as independent contributor - fluency in Typescript/Node.js and familiarity with best practices, able to implement changes independently, meeting architecture guidelines and quality expectations set by the team

Bonus points

  1. Interest in or experience with IoT applications, especially those related to vehicle connectivity
  2. Experience with MVNO/MNO providers and how they impact data connectivity for IoT devices
  3. Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Amazon Web Services (AWS), Kubernetes
  4. Experience with event-streaming technologies (e.g. Kafka or GCP Pub/Sub)
  5. Experience with observability tooling (Grafana, Prometheus)
  6. Experience in rapid growth or large-scale environments
