Senior Backend Engineer - Commerce

About the Role

Together AI is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to shape, build, and scale the commerce platform that drives our Together’s Cloud products. As a member of the Commerce Engineering team, you will develop and work on mission-critical commerce capabilities including usage-based billing, payment processing, customer-facing analytics, and product entitlements.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working close to the product surface: defining data models, designing clean backend APIs, and partnering closely with Product, Product Engineering, and other cross-functional teams to turn business requirements into reliable, scalable systems. You will help translate product and pricing strategy into durable backend primitives that directly impact revenue and customer experience.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience building large-scale, fault-tolerant API-driven services and backend systems
  • Strong experience designing relational database schemas and backend APIs that support product and business requirements
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with product and client engineering teams to deliver end-to-end features
  • Deep understanding of system scalability, reliability, and performance tradeoffs in distributed systems
  • Excellent understanding of low level operating systems concepts including multi-threading, memory management, networking and storage, performance and scale
  • Expert-level proficiency in one or more of Golang, TypeScript, Python, C++, or Java
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, AWS CDK, Pulumi) and CI/CD workflows
  • Experience with payment processors (e.g. Stripe) and billing systems a plus
  • Experience with Kubernetes, or containers a plus
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience

Responsibilities

  • Design and build foundational backend services that power Together’s monetization and commerce stack, including billing, payments, entitlements, and usage tracking
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product Managers, Finance, and Go-To-Market teams to understand requirements and deliver systems aligned with business goals
  • Own data modeling and schema design for core commerce entities, ensuring correctness, scalability, and long-term flexibility
  • Define and evolve backend API contracts in close collaboration with client engineers, enabling high-quality customer-facing product experiences
  • Analyze and improve the scalability, reliability, and performance of existing commerce APIs, databases, and distributed systems
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, documentation, and incident response to uphold a high engineering bar

Compensation

We offer competitive compensation, startup equity, health insurance and other competitive benefits. The US base salary range for this full-time position is: $160,000 - $250,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by location, level and role. Individual compensation will be determined by experience, skills, and job-related knowledge.
