Position Overview
The Senior Acoustics Engineer owns acoustic and noise compliance design for behind-the-meter (BTM) power generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS) deployed at mega-scale data center campuses. This role develops noise impact assessments, defines equipment attenuation requirements, and ensures BTM assets comply with local noise ordinances and permitting conditions—from early site feasibility through commissioning and long-term operations.

Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key areas:

  • Acoustic Design and Modeling
    • Own acoustic design and Basis of Design (BOD) for BTM power generation and energy storage assets, including reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, and BESS.
    • Perform noise source characterization, propagation modeling, and attenuation specifications.
    • Conduct site-specific noise impact assessments using industry-standard sound modeling tools such as SoundPLAN, CadnaA, or equivalent.
    • Determine compliance with local municipal noise ordinances and permit conditions.
  • Noise and Vibration Control
    • Define and specify noise control measures for generation equipment, including acoustic enclosures, exhaust silencers, intake attenuators, anti-vibration mounts, and barrier walls.
    • Coordinate acoustic specifications with OEMs and EPC partners.
    • Perform vibration assessments for generation and storage equipment.
    • Ensure structural isolation requirements are communicated to civil and structural engineers.
  • Permitting and Stakeholder Coordination
    • Support environmental permitting processes by preparing acoustic studies, noise technical reports, and community impact analyses for local, state, and federal submittals.
    • Coordinate with EHS, Legal, and civil teams on community stakeholder engagement and noise-condition compliance monitoring.
    • Support agency and community stakeholder reviews related to acoustic and noise compliance.
  • Commissioning and Portfolio Compliance
    • Develop and maintain acoustic design standards, specifications, and reusable BOD templates to support Fleet’s portfolio-scale deployment model.
    • Support FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities through acoustic performance testing and noise-limit verification.
    • Drive corrective actions when compliance thresholds are not met.
    • Establish KPIs for acoustic performance across Fleet’s operational BTM portfolio.
    • Lead root-cause analysis for noise-related complaints or permit exceedances.

Required Traits, Expertise and Skills

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Seven or more years of experience in acoustics or noise-control engineering within industrial, power-generation, or mission-critical infrastructure environments.

Technical / Functional Expertise

  • Expert-level acoustic modeling and noise-impact assessment skills using SoundPLAN, CadnaA, or equivalent tools.
  • Demonstrated experience confirming compliance with municipal noise ordinances and permit conditions.
  • Proven ownership of acoustic design and Basis of Design for complex power-generation and BESS projects.
  • Experience with noise-source characterization, propagation modeling, and attenuation specifications for reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, and BESS.
  • Hands-on experience designing and specifying acoustic enclosures, exhaust silencers, intake attenuators, anti-vibration mounts, and barrier walls.
  • Experience coordinating acoustic requirements with OEMs, EPCs, and civil and structural teams.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting environmental permitting and lifecycle noise compliance.
  • Experience authoring acoustic studies and technical reports and leading corrective actions when thresholds are exceeded.
  • Ability to develop and standardize acoustic design practices at portfolio scale, including KPIs, reusable standards and templates, and root-cause analysis.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lead acoustic design and compliance activities independently.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional coordination skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering, EHS, Legal, civil, structural, OEM, EPC, agency, and community stakeholders.
  • Strong ownership, leadership, and portfolio-level standardization capabilities.
  • Experience with noise-control design for reciprocating engines, gas turbines, BESS, or large rotating equipment.
  • Proficiency with acoustic modeling software such as SoundPLAN, CadnaA, ODEON, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with ISO 1996, ANSI/ASA standards, EPA noise guidelines, and local municipal ordinances.
  • INCE membership or Board of Noise Control Engineers certification.
  • Experience supporting community noise permitting and stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Experience working within EPC-delivered projects and managing acoustic vendor scopes.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
