Trade Compliance Specialist

Our Legal team is seeking an experienced Trade Compliance Specialist to support and enhance our compliance program. This role is responsible for managing day-to-day compliance activities, supporting export licensing and classification efforts, maintaining compliance documentation, and assisting internal teams to ensure that international business activities are conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements. The position requires strong attention to detail, familiarity with U.S. export control frameworks, and the ability to work collaboratively across engineering, logistics, sales, and legal functions. The essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Export Compliance
    • Support classification of products, software, and technology under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
    • Maintain internal records of export classifications (ECCNs and USML categories) and ensure accuracy within compliance and ERP systems.
    • Conduct restricted party screening and sanctions checks against applicable U.S. government lists.
    • Assist with export license applications, agreements, and other regulatory filings with U.S. government agencies.
    • Maintain export authorization records and ensure transactions are conducted within license conditions and limitations.
  • Customs Compliance
    • Determine correct customs classification (Schedule B/HTSUS codes), customs valuation, and preferential origin status.
    • Support customs declaration processes carried out by external customs brokers.
    • Coordinate with customs agents, regulatory agencies, carriers, and clients to ensure smooth transit.
  • Program Support & Governance
    • Maintain compliance records, licensing logs, training materials, and internal procedure documentation.
    • Assist with internal compliance reviews, audits, and risk assessments.
    • Support development and maintenance of compliance procedures, training materials, and guidance documents.
    • Monitor regulatory updates and assist in communicating changes in export control requirements to internal stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with logistics, engineering, purchasing, and legal partners on compliance matters.
    • Support strategic compliance projects, such as process automation, system implementation, or regulatory updates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Develops relationships with team members built on trust and respect.

Education and work experience requirements are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Business Administration, Logistics, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience supporting export licensing processes and classification determinations.

Additional requirements are:

  • U.S. Citizenship.

TrellisWare Technologies pays competitively according to the market in an individual's geographic location, in addition to their qualifications and experience. The posted range is annually and for individuals located in the San Diego, CA area.

San Diego, California Pay Range

$80,000 - $115,000 USD
