Junior Software Engineer | Bokun

About Tripadvisor

The Tripadvisor Group connects people to experiences worth sharing, and aims to be the world’s most trusted source for travel and experiences. We leverage our brands, technology, and capabilities to connect our global audience with partners through rich content, travel guidance, and two-sided marketplaces for experiences, accommodations, restaurants, and other travel categories. The subsidiaries of Tripadvisor, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRIP), include a portfolio of travel brands and businesses, including Tripadvisor, Viator, and TheFork.

Join Bókun, a Tripadvisor company, and help transform the tours and activities industry. Our booking management software helps travel operators worldwide increase their bookings and simplify operations. As part of our team, you'll help develop solutions that improve how businesses in the travel sector operate and grow.

We are looking for a Junior Engineer to join our team in Reykjavík, Iceland. This role is open to engineers with up to 2–3 years of experience, including recent graduates with strong projects to show. You'll work across our full stack alongside experienced colleagues, building features that ship to real users.

Job Location: On-site

This role is an on-site position in our Reykjavik, Iceland office.

What we're looking for

Required

  • Computer Science Degree
  • Proficient in at least one modern programming language
  • Comfortable communicating in English (our working language)

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with TypeScript, React, or Java
  • Experience with REST APIs and modern web development
  • Some experience with relational databases (SQL)
  • Personal projects, open source contributions, or a portfolio you're proud of
  • Background or interest in travel, e-commerce, or marketplaces

What you'll do

  • Build for real operators. Work on features used by thousands of tour and activity businesses around the world — what you ship gets used, fast.
  • Work across the stack. You'll touch both frontend (React, TypeScript) and backend (Java), and figure out which side you want to grow into.
  • Write code, daily. This is a hands-on role. You'll spend most of your time building, not in meetings.
  • Work end-to-end. Collaborate with product, design, and other engineers to take features from idea to production.
  • Grow your craft. We invest in your development — through code review, pairing, and time to learn new things.
  • Collaborate with the best. Join a team of experienced engineers who'll brainstorm ideas with you, give thoughtful feedback, and help you level up.

Working with AI. Work in a team striving for the cutting edge of AI generated coding practices.

Our stack

Frontend

  • TypeScript
  • React
  • Tailwind CSS
  • TanStack Query & Router
  • Next.js (booking management UI)
  • React Native (operator app)

Backend

  • Java
  • Play Framework
  • MySQL
  • OpenSearch
  • Redis
  • Amazon SQS

Don't worry if you're not familiar with every technology — for this role, we expect you to be learning, and we're committed to helping you grow!

Working with AI

Every engineer at Bókun has access to Claude Code and other leading AI coding assistants, and we actively use them as part of day-to-day development. We've invested in this seriously — both in tools and in the time to figure out how they fit into our workflows. If working somewhere that takes AI engineering seriously matters to you, you'll feel at home here.

Why Bókun?

  • Competitive Compensation: Attractive salary and performance-based bonuses
  • Work-Life Balance: Flexible working hours and remote work options
  • Career Growth: Continuous learning opportunities and clear paths for advancement

  2. Technical screening (45 minutes): A conversation to assess your technical foundations and learn about your projects and interests.
  3. Coding assignment: Solve a simple coding assignment at your own pace.
