
Packaging Engineer

As a Packaging Engineer for trü frü North America, you will be responsible for working closely with Engineering and Operations to support new manufacturing line start-ups from scoping to execution. You will also be responsible for leading R&D packaging projects relating to continuous improvement, cost savings and innovation. You will be expected to work autonomously within your technical expertise while maintaining strong collaboration with cross-functional teams.
*This position is a hybrid position located in Salt Lake City, Utah, but also open to candidates in Chicago, Illinois area.*
What you'll do
- Lead R&D Validation of new packaging equipment assets for manufacturing site start ups, including support for Factory Acceptance Testing and Commissioning prior to Validation.
- Lead development of packaging material which supports design for circularity and other sustainability goals for the portfolio.
- Develop the packaging Quality Assurance protocol for manufacturing sites and oversee implementation and handoff to Quality team.
- Communicate technical capabilities and limitations of existing packaging manufacturing network to the tru fru business team while anticipating and planning for future changes.
- Initiate, coordinate and execute line trials at appropriate supply locations to confirm that quality attributes and performance metrics are achieved. Document trial objectives and results thoroughly.
- Contribute to cross-functional project teams during the commercialization process by providing regular updates on technical progress and risks. Evaluate all packaging decisions by assessing desirability, feasibility and viability.
- Develop detailed packaging specifications to ensure quality materials and best value for money on all packaging components (primary, secondary and tertiary) used at our facilities, co-packers and co-manufacturers.
- Collaborate with the Engineering team to provide technical support to the external manufacturing sites addressing quality, process and equipment-related issues.
- Identify new opportunities for cost savings and value creation related to packaging.
- Engage directly with packaging suppliers and Procurement to drive successful project execution.
- Support Tru Fru’s mission to become more efficient through automation by providing input and data entry on Master Data and R&D systems related to packaging.
- Collaborate with global Mars Health & Wellness counterparts in Packaging, Procurement, Regulatory and Sustainability to ensure sharing of best practices and coordination of key activities.

You have...
- B.S. Packaging Engineering Degree or related technical discipline with 3+ years of industry experience.
- Food and/or CPG manufacturing experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of foundational knowledge in packaging manufacturing and machine material interaction. Demonstrated involvement in new Packaging line commissioning preferred.
- Experience working with Flexible Film and Pouch formats is a must.
- Experience managing multiple priorities and working effectively with teams.
- Ability to travel 25 to 50% of the time.
Pluses
- Demonstrated involvement in new Packaging line commissioning preferred.
- Experience with monomaterial films and post-consumer recycled material.
- Paperboard & corrugate experience.
- Experience with unit load design and distribution testing.
