Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Analyst

United States
Truss is a software development consultancy that builds government technology people actually want to use. Our systems regularly show up in the New York Times, and when we ask our team what they love most about working here, the answer is consistently the same: the people. We’re collaborative, we hold ourselves to high standards, and we care deeply about the craft of making government services work better.
We have been a remote-first organization since our inception and are passionate about work-life balance, building impactful teams, and committed to creating environments that encourage collaboration, different points of view, and creative solutioning.

Truss is seeking a Senior FP&A Analyst on a contract basis to lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling, and to serve as a strategic finance partner to project and company leadership.
This role will own the models that guide decisions, drive analysis of project and pricing performance, and provide Truss leadership with a clear, confident read on what’s driving the numbers and how that should impact our strategic objectives.
As a senior member of the finance team, you’ll be expected to set the standard for how this work is done. This includes leveraging AI tools, and automated workflows to make our finance processes more efficient, accurate, and able to provide greater insight.

This person is someone we can count on to…

  • Own the budget, the rolling forecast, the financial models, and the project-level P&Ls. These are the numbers leadership makes pricing, hiring, and investment decisions from.
  • Educate project managers and executives on how to read financial results and act on them, and serve as the go-to resource on modeling and analysis best practices.
  • Understand how Truss makes money: its contract mix (T&M, fixed-price, cost-plus), its indirect rate structure, and the economics of how projects are delivered.
  • Improve how finance work gets done, defaulting to AI and automation to cut manual effort and raise accuracy.

This is a full-time, fully remote, six month contract position with the potential to extend or convert. The hourly rate is $55-$60, commensurate with experience.

The FP&A Analyst will be responsible for
delivering successful outcomes in three key areas:

1. Build and run a reliable budget and rolling forecast process that serves as the single source of truth

  • The annual budget is built bottom-up with department and project leads and approved by the CFO within first month
  • The rolling forecast is refreshed monthly, within 7 business days of close.
  • Revenue and Cash forecast accuracy is within ±5% on a 90-day horizon.
  • The monthly variance report explains every variance above 5% threshold with its driver and a recommended action.
  • Cash and working-capital risks, including unbilled AR and contract burn, are flagged at least 4 weeks ahead, so there are no surprise shortfalls.
  • Models are documented well enough that the CFO or Controller can follow the logic without a walkthrough.

2. Stand up project and pricing profitability analysis so Truss knows which work makes money and prices new work to win profitably

  • Project-level P&Ls exist for 100% of active projects and tracked monthly with cross functional partner, these are refreshed monthly
  • Gross margin support for cross functional partner deliverables
  • Every new bid and renewal has a pricing model showing its margin impact before submission, turned around as needed.

3. Modernize finance reporting and workflows with AI and automation

  • Recurring finance workflows (close support, reporting, reconciliations, model updates) are mapped within the first 60 days, with the top 3 automation targets identified
  • Cross functional relationships established with engineering for company wide AI initiatives
  • Every new or changed process is documented so it can be run by someone else

Skillset:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, or accounting, with deep, hands-on expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling
  • Advanced Excel and Google Sheets skills, including building complex models from scratch
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Scenario and sensitivity analysis
    • Variance analysis and identifying key business drivers
    • Cash flow and working capital management, including unbilled AR and contract burn
    • Project P&L and gross margin analysis
    • Indirect cost rates (fringe, overhead, G&A)
    • Pricing analysis for bids, proposals, and renewals
    • Utilization, backlog, and contract performance tracking
    • Management reporting and board deck preparation
  • Experience with accounting systems and ERPs (QuickBooks Online or comparable)
  • Proven track record of owning process improvements and documentation
  • Highly organized, accountable, and detail-oriented
  • Able to translate financial results clearly for non-finance audiences
  • Collaborative business partner to project managers and executives
  • Self-directed and able to work independently with minimal oversight
  • Thrives in a fully remote environment, using tools like Slack and Google Workspace to collaborate effectively

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building KPI dashboards in Power BI, Tableau, or Looker
  • Comfort using AI tools and automation, including scripting, to streamline workflows
Eligibility:
You must be eligible to work in the U.S. and may be required to pass a federal background check at the discretion of the client/project you are placed on. Truss employees must live and work within the contiguous U.S. Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor work visas at this time.
