Nurse Practitioner Ambulatory Infusion
Job Summary
The Nurse Practitioner serves as the clinical lead for the Ambulatory Infusion Center (AIC) and is responsible for coordinating and supervising the provision of infusion therapy to all patients. Responsible for provider order clarification, patient evaluation, care planning, education, medication preparation, infusion administration, and monitoring the safety and effectiveness of therapy. Collaborates with ordering providers, AIC Medical Director, and AIC clinical and operational staff to deliver high quality, safe, and cost-effective care while achieving high levels of patient satisfaction. Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical knowledge with exceptional bedside manner. Works collaboratively with the General Manager to drive clinical, operational, and quality improvement initiatives.
Essential Functions
- Perform focused patient assessment to support development of the infusion care plan.
- Determine appropriate venipuncture and/or catheter site and establish intravenous access.
- Prepare medications for infusion according to manufacturer instructions utilizing aseptic technique.
- Administer infusions via electronic pump, flow restricted tubing, or gravity as indicated.
- Provide education to patients and caregivers about medications, side effects, diagnosis, goals of therapy, and the treatment plan.
- Observe patients’ response to infusion therapy and document results in the electronic health record.
- Identify, assess, and provide medical intervention for infusion-related reactions.
- Demonstrate proper infection control techniques.
- Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with health system providers and stakeholders.
- Uphold clinical integrity, scope of practice, and best practices according to the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.
- Demonstrate commitment to learning and professional development through attending required training, completing continuing education, and maintaining licenses and certifications.
- Supervise day-to-day clinical operations within the AIC, including all care provided by Infusion RNs.
- In the absence of the General Manager, responsible for managing daily operations of all non-clinical departments of the AIC and ensuring appropriate resolution or escalation of all matters.
- Ensure care is delivered in compliance with applicable laws, rules, requirements, accreditation standards, and internal policies and procedures.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of complaints, grievances, errors, adverse events, and other unanticipated outcomes according to policy.
- Lead quarterly Quality Management Committee meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education
- Master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited nursing program
Licensure
- Current, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse (RN) with nurse practitioner certification as required by the State of Pennsylvania.
Certifications
- American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Board certification in a relevant area preferred.
Experience
- At least two years of APRN experience required.
- Infusion experience with biologic therapies preferred.

- Excellent bedside manner.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Normal clinic environment. The position requires the incumbent to be exposed to a variety of substances within the department, including occasional exposure to hazardous waste materials, toxins, and hazardous pharmaceuticals.
- Strength: position requires incumbent to frequently perform physical activities requiring ability to push/pull or lift objects of up to 20 pounds; seldom perform physical activities requiring ability to push/pull or lift objects of up to 50 pounds.
- Manual Dexterity: position requires incumbent to constantly perform simple motor skills such as standing or walking and manipulative skills such as writing; frequently perform simple and moderately difficult manipulative skills such as typing; and frequently perform difficult manipulative skills such as venipuncture and aseptic medication compounding.
- Coordination: position requires incumbent to constantly perform gross body coordination such as walking and stooping and frequently perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as keyboard skills.
- Mobility: position requires incumbent to constantly perform mobility skills such as walking, standing, and sitting, with seldom-prolonged standing or sitting in an uncomfortable position.
- Visual Discrimination: position requires incumbent to frequently see objects closely for reading and patient assessment.
- Hearing: position requires incumbent to constantly be able to hear normal sound with some background noise.
