About the job
This is a critical leadership position where you will build a new engineering organization from the ground up to deliver a net-new, customer-facing fraud product line. You will also lead the evolution of our established Lookup product, transforming it into a foundational data intelligence asset for fraud prevention use cases. We are investing in an experienced and visionary engineering leader to set the technical strategy, build high-performing teams, and ship a new suite of commercial fraud-prevention products that empower our customers to build trust and safety into their applications.
We're seeking an accomplished Director of Engineering who will report directly to our head of engineering, bringing a blend of strategic vision, organizational leadership, and technical depth. You will thrive in this role if you are passionate about building products that have a massive impact, excel at scaling teams and systems, and have a strong sense of ownership for both new ventures and existing product lines. Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll:
- Recruit, lead, and mentor a high-performing, globally distributed organization of engineering managers and software engineers.
- Define and execute the multi-year technical vision and roadmap for a new, commercial fraud product suite sold to Twilio customers, from inception to launch and scale.
- Evolve the technical strategy for the Twilio Lookup product, reimagining it as a core data intelligence engine that powers both standalone data use cases and the new fraud product suite.
- Partner closely with Product Management, Data Science, GTM, and other cross-functional leaders to shape product strategy and ensure alignment on business goals.
- Drive a culture of innovation, velocity, and quality, fostering an environment of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Oversee the development of a highly scalable, real-time B2B fraud platform that Twilio's customers will use to protect their own applications.
- Champion engineering and operational best practices, establishing metrics and processes for monitoring system health, performance, and customer impact.
- Manage team budget, headcount planning, and resource allocation to align with strategic priorities.
- Communicate the vision, strategy, and status of your organization effectively to a wide range of audiences, from individual engineers to senior executives

*Required:
- 10+ years of experience in software development, with a proven track record of shipping complex, scalable, and robust software products.
- 5+ years of engineering management experience leading multiple teams ("manager of managers").
- Demonstrated experience in building and scaling engineering organizations, including hiring and developing both engineers and engineering managers.
- Proven ability to set a technical vision and drive it to execution, making critical architectural decisions for large-scale distributed systems.
- Strong product sense and experience working closely with product management to define and deliver on a product roadmap.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence, align, and build strong relationships with stakeholders across the company.
- Experience managing the operations of mission-critical production systems.
- Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
Desired:
- Direct experience in the fraud detection, risk, trust and safety, or cybersecurity domains.
- Familiarity with building data-intensive applications or machine learning-powered products.
- Experience building and launching commercial B2B or developer-focused SaaS products.
- Experience managing mature, revenue-generating product lines alongside new product development.
- Knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure, identity verification, or data intelligence products.
- Experience building developer-focused APIs and SDKs.
Location
This role will be remote, but is not eligible to be hired in CA, CT, NJ, NY, PA, WA.
Travel
We prioritize connection and opportunities to build relationships with our customers and each other. For this role, you may be required to travel occasionally to participate in project or team in-person meetings.

Compensation
*Please note this role is open to candidates outside of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Washington D.C., and Washington State. The information below is provided for candidates hired in those locations only.
The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:
- Based in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont or Washington D.C. : $223,300 - $279,200.
- Based in New York, New Jersey, Washington State, or California (outside of the San Francisco Bay area): $236,500 - $295,600.
- Based in the San Francisco Bay area, California: $262,700 - 328,400.
- This role may be eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and corporate bonus plan. All roles are eligible for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location.
