Intern - Bioinformatics
The Twist Bioscience Internship Program provides exposure into one of the top emerging synthetic biology companies. Throughout the program, you will gain hands-on practical experience working with seasoned professionals, expand your professional network, and develop a deeper understanding of how we work in service of our customers globally. This role is designed to challenge you and be influential to your future career.
About the Role
This internship offers a unique opportunity to develop a critical automated pipeline that will significantly accelerate our protein design capabilities. You'll integrate state-of-the-art computational methods to streamline the design, prediction, and validation of novel proteins, directly contributing to future enzyme projects and research initiatives.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Integrate ProteinMPNN: Implement and refine capabilities for novel protein sequence generation, including conditional generation with structural constraints and motif preservation.
- Leverage ESMFold: Integrate ESMFold to enable rapid and accurate 3D structure prediction from newly generated protein sequences.
- Develop Molecular Docking Workflows: Utilize and enhance existing automated docking pipelines to evaluate protein binding affinity and specificity.
- Build a Validation Framework: Design and implement metrics to assess design quality, focusing on structural stability, binding scores, and drugability properties.
- Deliver an End-to-End Pipeline: Create a functional protein design pipeline from sequence generation to docking, complete with an automated scoring and ranking system.
- Develop a User Interface: Contribute to a web interface for intuitive input of design parameters and visualization of results.
- Document and Validate: Provide comprehensive documentation and validate the pipeline on benchmark targets.
- Present Findings: Conclude your internship with an internal presentation showcasing your work and its impact.
What You'll Bring
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Bioengineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- Familiarity with Machine Learning/Deep Learning concepts.
- Light molecular modeling experience (e.g., PyMOL, RDKit).
- Prior experience with system integration or pipeline development is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for applying computational methods to biological challenges.
About Twist Bioscience
Twist Bioscience synthesizes genes from scratch, known as “writing” DNA. Just as children learn to both read and write, the next phase of development for the genomics revolution is the ability to write DNA.
At Twist Bioscience, we work in service of people who are changing the world for the better. In fields such as health care, agriculture, industrial chemicals and data storage, our unique silicon-based DNA Synthesis Platform provides precision at a scale that is otherwise unavailable to our customers.
