Hybrid work

Udemy is headquartered in San Francisco with global offices in Australia, India, Ireland, Türkiye, and other US locations. Our robust hybrid work model spans San Francisco, Denver, Ankara, Dublin, and Melbourne. This hybrid position requires two days per week in the office at the nearest hub. About This Role:

The Platform Services team builds software and systems to support the ongoing development/maintenance of 200+ microservices and microfrontends being built and updated across the organization.  Working on the team, you will build libraries, work on CI/CD patterns, testing frameworks, build quality standards, and more.  The team also regularly prototypes and rolls out new tooling, all in the name of finding the most efficient systems to automate, allowing feature teams to build new functionality with increasing efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and release libraries, components, and tools for creating and maintaining best in class services and frontends at Udemy.

  • Identify and evaluate new technologies that improve performance, maintainability and robustness of our backend software.

  • Plan, organize, and complete work within agile sprints.  Communicate effectively on progress towards meeting expectations.

  • Contribute in code reviews, design discussions, and develop features and solutions that scale.

  • Use best software development practices and adopt patterns of the team and organization to develop consistent and maintainable code

  • Contribute to a team culture that values openness, inclusiveness, quality, robustness, and scalability while fostering innovation.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a full-stack or backend software engineer.

  • Ability to learn and work with existing code bases.

  • Knowledge of Object Oriented software design patterns and computer science fundamentals (e.g. data structures, algorithms).Web application development using modern frameworks.

  • Minimum 4 years of experience with Java, Kotlin or other strongly typed language

  • Basic understanding of persistent scaled datastores (SQL, NoSQL)

  • Experience building backend services called by frontend interfaces

  • Experience with Testing methods, including unit and integration tests.

  • Experience with containerization technologies (docker, lxc, etc.).

  • Experience with container orchestration technologies (Kubernetes, Marathon, Nomad, etc.).

  • Experience working with cloud computing services providers (AWS, Google cloud platform, Azure, etc.).

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience with microservice development and communications using gRPC.

  • Experience with frontend frameworks such as NextJS

  • Experience working with Real-time messaging and NoSQL infrastructures: Redis, RabbitMQ, Celery, Kafka, etc.

  • Experience with Spring Boot Microservices

  • Familiarity with monitoring and alerting tools (DataDog, HoneyComb etc)
