The Associate Medical Director Italy serves as the Country medical & scientific senior lead expert and is accountable for the medical leadership, governance, medical performance and medical culture within the country. The Associate Medical Director is responsible for developing and executing on the local medical strategy and plans, in alignment with the Regional/Global Medical Plans. 

The Associate Medical Director Italy leads medical and scientific efforts in the country, overseeing strategy, governance, execution of all medical activities and performance. They develop and execute local medical plans aligned with global strategies, ensuring high scientific standards, compliance and collaboration across functions. This role serves as the primary interface for medical decisions at the regional level, providing expertise throughout product development and commercialization. Additionally, they manage field activities, including coaching the medical team and overseeing key account relationships with global opinion leaders.

Supports, coordinates, and implements medical projects and tactical plans according to the global/regional and local needs and specifications, with high degree of accountability, compliance and integrity.
Beyond the oversight of the field medical team, including their coaching, development and drive for performance, the Associate Medical Director will also be responsible for managing the field activities of key accounts which encompass the leading Global KOLs of the relevant therapeutic areas.

Work Model: 

Field: Officially documented as working as a member of the Ultragenyx field team, generally interacting with third parties on behalf of Ultragenyx.



  • Develops and implements the local medical strategy for designated products
  • Manage the in country Medical Affairs field-based team, with some guidance from own manager and provides leadership, coaching and mentoring to retain and develop the team.
  • Ensure assignments are objective-oriented and reviewed in terms of meeting the organizations objectives and timelines. Independent decision making required along with collaborative decision making after consultation with manager.
  • Ensures adequate budget allocation
  • Identifies, develops, and maintains relationships with Key External Experts; collaborates with key scientific societies and advocacy groups to uncover insights, scientific trends and gaps and to advance the clinical practice
  • Ensures the integrity of the scientific data used in all promotional claims and materials in accordance with legislative requirements (by final approval in line with local compliance & code of practice)
  • Provides onboarding and all required training/educational needs to the medical colleagues
  • Integrates the cross functional team, to collaborate on the development of the Brand Plan and to provide medical input into relevant activities
  • Provides scientific and strategic input into reimbursement, value dossiers and other relevant market access related documents and activities
  • Works with local and regional/global teams on data evidence generation plans to support the clinical needs and local access to market.
  • Ensure execution of local evidence generation aligned with the Global Strategy and in accordance with local regulations and GCP-standards.
  • Supports the performance of clinical trials in close collaboration with the Regional Medical and Clinical Operations teams
  • Ensure adequate management of Medical information activities


  • Advanced degree (e.g., MD, PhD, PharmD) in a clinical or medical specialty or advanced degree (e.g., MS, MSN, MPH)
  • Minimum 3 years MSL experience
  • Demonstrable leadership experience
  • Ability to think strategically
  • Clearly communicates the strategic vision to team so they can deliver on goals and objectives
  • Excellent communication skills required in Italian and English
  • Demonstrates the ability to develop good and credible relationships with medical professionals
  • Strong budget planning & execution expertise
  • Prioritizes initiatives and strategies as they relate to his/her own area.
  • Directs and controls the activities of multiple disease areas
  • Helps others understand the relevance and importance of the strategic vision to team, and gains commitment and buy-in towards key outcomes and deliverables #LI-CK1  #LI-Remote
