Buyer – Home, Art & Garden
You’ve got taste. You’ve got data chops. You know how to spot a winner, scale it smart, and lead a team while doing it.
Uncommon Goods is hiring a Buyer to lead our Home, Art, and Garden categories. This isn’t a desk-bound merchandising role—it’s a high-visibility, cross-functional leadership position. You’ll manage a team, drive the product strategy, and work directly with vendors, creatives, planners, and execs to launch beautiful, thoughtful, and high-performing assortments.
This hybrid role works on-site at our waterfront Brooklyn location one to two days a week and reports to our Senior Director of Merchandising.
What You’ll Own:
- Lead the full category strategy—balancing creative vision, assortment gaps, and hard business goals.
- Manage and mentor a team, including an Associate Buyer and an Assistant Buyer.
- Source and onboard new artists and design partners who align with our brand values and product standards.
- Develop strong vendor relationships and uncover new leads through trade shows, competitive research, and industry trend tracking.
- Perform weekly, monthly, and quarterly business analysis and hindsight presentations to the executive leadership team.
- Achieve topline revenue, new item revenue, gross margin, gross profit, and exclusive product sales targets.
- Partner with Planning to manage inventory levels, cost of goods, and profitability metrics.
- Collaborate with Creative, Site Merchandising, and Marketing teams to ensure new items are showcased effectively in print and on the web.
- Partner with Product Development and Design to bring exclusive, brand-right items to life.
You’ll Thrive Here If You:
- Have 5–7+ years of buying or merchandising experience in retail or e-comm—especially in home, art, gifting, or lifestyle categories.
- Are a strategic thinker who can connect the dots between product, story, and sales.
- Excel at building relationships with makers, artists, and cross-functional partners.
- Know your numbers and can present with confidence to leadership.
- Lead with vision but love digging into details—financials, product specs, and seasonal pacing included.
- Are highly organized, curious, and proactive—comfortable leading others while owning your own work.
Additional Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to travel ~25–30% of the time for trade shows, vendor visits, and sourcing trips.
- Must be able to lift, move, and carry sample boxes independently.
- Familiarity with NetSuite or similar merchandising systems a plus.
