Senior Software Engineer
Job Title: Senior Software Engineer, Platform Service
Department: Product Development
About the Role: The Sr. Software Engineer is a backend and API expert, helping advance healthcare and social care interoperability through scalable platform development. This role centers on building and maintaining core APIs and services that power the Unite Us product suite, requiring experience with object-oriented programming, large-scale systems, and platform contributions. Working within the highly collaborative Platform Services team, the engineer will partner with both internal and external stakeholders, balancing multiple workstreams across greenfield and legacy systems while prioritizing team success over individual contributions. The role also involves developing integration solutions that connect the Unite Us platform with community-based organizations, Health Information Exchanges, and broader care networks; while experience in healthcare or social care is beneficial, it is not required.
What You'll Do:
- Lead end-to-end development of backend systems, from architecture and design through implementation, deployment, and monitoring
- Design, build, and evolve scalable APIs and platform services that support interoperability and a growing ecosystem of partners
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, ensuring long-term scalability, performance, and reliability
- Drive architectural decisions and contribute to both greenfield and legacy systems with a focus on modular, reusable design
- Build and maintain data integration solutions, including standards-based interfaces (e.g., FHIR) and secure authentication protocols (OAuth, SAML, SCIM, SMART)
- Own system observability, performance, and reliability by defining metrics, monitoring, and proactively addressing issues
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex scalability and performance challenges across distributed backend services
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and by promoting engineering best practices
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering partners to refine requirements and deliver high-quality solutions
- Champion best practices in testing, CI/CD, and agile development while contributing to a collaborative, high-performing team culture
You’re a great fit for this role if:
- At least 5+ years of software development experience, with strong preference for experience in healthcare
- Experience with FHIR is highly desirable
- Deep expertise in building and scaling RESTful backend services in a production environment
- Expertise designing and building SaaS products in a cloud environment (preferably AWS) with containerized applications (e.g., Docker, ECS, EKS)
- Proficiency with Ruby on Rails, GoLang, Python (Flask/FastApi frameworks) and/or other general programming languages
- Proficiency in relational databases such as Postgres
- Strong understanding of testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring best practices
- Experience with open standards-based authentication frameworks, such as OAuth and SAML
- Experience with APM and logging systems like Datadog or New Relic
- Experience working in cross-functional agile teams, with a product-focused and customer-centric mindset
- Experience working with popular front-end JavaScript frameworks, like React
