Engineering Manager
About Ferocia
We're the team behind Up, but under the hood, we're Ferocia - a passionate tech company driven by financial inclusion. Since 2011, we've been crafting innovative financial tools, starting with the digital platform for Bendigo Bank. We believe technology can empower everyone, from the advantaged to the disadvantaged, which is why Up was born.
Now, as part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank family, we combine the agility of a small company with the reach and stability of a major player. Together, we're carbon neutral, community-focused, and dedicated to high standards of corporate governance. Our mission? To leverage technology to help Australians move from financial stress and anxiety to a place of confidence and empowerment.

About the Role
We are currently hiring for a number of Engineering Manager roles across Ferocia as the company enters a new phase of growth. The teams to be managed are already packed with excellent, skilled humans and the missions for each are clear.
Where you come in is to integrate with the people and the technology, nurture what’s already working and bring your experience to evolve how we work as we scale to the next level. At Ferocia our strategic advantage lies in having a big impact with a small yet nimble team, and your contributions will influence the entire engineering organisation.
We expect you to have an understanding of the technical stack and its particularities, however these roles do not involve regular software engineering, although we encourage it where time, focus and your skillset allow.
Key Elements of the Role
- Prioritise the wellbeing and effectiveness of the people who get the work done. This is primarily your team but also includes the wider company.
- Optimise the delivery of the team incorporating the people (and their wellbeing), business context and constraints.
- Understand, define, negotiate, and prioritise requirements with our SMEs, both in Ferocia and across the wider Bendigo & Adelaide Bank Group is key to succeeding in this role.
- Act as a technical mentor and guide the engineers on your team as they design, build, test, ship and support our software. You’ll need to guide technical design decisions, adjudicate technical debates and participate in robust engineering discussions.
- Be a proactive partner to our Design and Product Managers, ensuring we maintain our delivery of high quality of software for the benefit of the customer and the business.
- Ferocia is a former startup currently experiencing a growth spurt. Part of this role will be working with the other Engineering Managers to create systems and processes and improve and refine the ones we have, to be effective with a larger engineering team and a broader scope of delivery. Your experience and opinions on how to grow an Engineering organisation, what to do and what not to do will be put to good use.
What You Bring
- A people-first, empathetic and engaged approach to management. You have experience managing software engineers and can speak to the values and philosophy that underlie how you approach the job. You are a strong advocate for your reports, and work to cultivate and grow their skills and careers.
- Excellent communication skills. Your ability to listen effectively and clearly communicate are the main tools you use in the execution of your work.
- Experience with optimising the delivery of software engineering teams. The elements that can create a harmonious environment for effectively delivery are many and varied, and we’ll want to hear about your experiences shipping value to customers.
- Technical proficiency. You will have worked as an software engineer or adjacent and are fluent in the language and concepts of modern web or mobile development.
- A desire to solve the problems in front of you. As a small but growing company we all tend to pitch in and do what needs to be done, even if it stretches our capabilities and experience. This role will stretch beyond “ensure your team is shipping” and we want you to be up for that.
Nice To Haves
- Experience working with risk and compliance when building software. Financial industry specifically is a bonus.
- Experience working with React and/or Rails.
