About the Role:
This is a remote position based in the Montreal area. At Upgrade, the Platform team works horizontally with our different engineering teams. We build services, tools and shared libraries to simplify / abstract / speedup the day to day of our developers.
Part of the Platform group, the runtime squad is responsible for horizontal services and our Java and Python foundations. We also lead various Ai initiatives on coding assistants, the adoption of Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent2Agent (A2A) and Agent Payment Protocol (AP2).

What You'll Do:
- Partner with product and engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable, high-quality technical solutions.
- Participate in architectural reviews and influence key technical decisions for our platform services.
- Design, develop, and maintain complex applications and libraries using Java and Spring Boot, with a focus on scalable microservices.
- Contribute to the platform Java foundation, including shared templates, frameworks, and common libraries that accelerate product development.
- Create and maintain documentation for platform foundations, providing support and guidance to product teams through troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Leverage modern CI/CD tools to build, test, and deliver robust software at scale.
- Establish, maintain, and advocate for best practices in code quality, ai assisted development, security, testing, and deployment.
- Support and enhance the test framework and architecture, including integration with third-party systems and services.
- Drive continuous improvements in reliability, performance, and developer productivity.
What We Look For:
- Strong expertise in Java design and programming, with hands-on experience in Spring Boot. Python with FastAPI is a plus.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively and work in agile, cross-functional teams.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems and microservices architecture patterns.
- Familiarity with Ai coding assistants. (Claude code, Codex, Cursor)
- You explored MCP in the past few months.
- Knowledge of API design principles (REST, GraphQL) and API gateway patterns.
- Experience with ORM frameworks and proficiency in SQL/database programming.
- Hands-on experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) is highly desirable.
Experience deploying and managing services on AWS or similar cloud environments is a strong plus. - Familiarity with monitoring/observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, etc.) is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent practical experience).

The compensation range of this position in Canada is $120,000 - $150,000 CAD annually plus equity and benefits. Within this range, an individual's base pay will be dependent on a variety of factors, including without limitation, job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.
