AI-First Staff Engineer - Backend

United States / Remote

We’re building the AI-powered future of maintenance.

UpKeep is on a mission to reinvent how the physical world runs—starting with the frontline teams who maintain it. We’re the creators of the world’s first AI-first CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System), equipping technicians and facilities teams with automation, machine learning, and predictive insights that drive operational speed, safety, and efficiency.

What started as a garage-built prototype is now a fast-scaling SaaS company, backed by Insight Partners, Emergence Capital, and Y Combinator. Over 4,000 companies—including Shell, Yamaha, Unilever, and Marriott—run on UpKeep to modernize their asset operations. We’re leading the $30B category shift toward Asset Operations Management, where uptime, intelligence, and AI converge.

Why join us:

  • Own the AI-first transformation of an entire industry.
Every feature we ship leverages AI—from predictive work orders to sensor-driven automations. You’re not just iterating—you’re pioneering how data reshapes physical operations.

  • Real traction, real scale.
Recognized as Gartner’s #1 Facility Management solution and G2’s top-rated CMMS, we’ve earned market leadership through product, not puff.

  • A company where builders thrive.
We move fast, optimize for outcomes, and give high-agency operators the autonomy to ship big things. Our culture rewards bold thinking, not bureaucracy.

  • Global team, local energy.
With 100+ employees across the world, we support remote-first work with deep investment in our LA HQ—where certain roles and leadership converge for rapid innovation.

  • Equity and upside, not just a paycheck.
Competitive comp, meaningful ownership, and benefits that support your health, focus, and long-term growth.

If you’re driven by impact, energized by AI, and hungry to transform a legacy industry—we’re hiring!

Looking for a Staff Engineer who sees AI as a superpower, not a threat.

UpKeep has gone AI-native to dominate the maintenance software space. We need someone who doesn't just write code — you architect intelligent systems, influence product decisions, and level up everyone around you using AI as your multiplier.

You won't be "just another dev" → You’re a builder

You'll be a builder who thinks like a founder and codes like the future is now. We believe in the convergence of engineering + product + business + UX. Everyone who works with us gets leveled up across all dimensions.

Our Offer

  • Agency: Freedom to make AI-driven architectural + product decisions that matter
  • Impact: Your AI-enhanced code will be used by tens of thousands of maintenance teams daily, including companies that build products that you interact with every single day.
  • Talent: You'll be surrounded by other AI-curious + hungry humans
  • Learning: Perfect blend of trying new tooling and building scalable, reliable systems

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years building things that people actually use
  • You've architected systems that handle real scale
  • You code with Cursor (Windsurf, or other AI coding Tools) and get excited about their changelogs
  • You see AI as enabling humans to achieve incredible feats, not replacing them
  • You don't need to be an AI expert — but you need to be AI-curious and learn fast and have built AI side project for fun in the past 6 months - show us your experiments
  • You had a chapter where you worked in a highly disciplined environment (could be military, top-tier company, competitive sports, etc.)

Tech Stack We Live In

  • TypeScript + React (Top quality and Consistent Front-Ends)
  • Node.js + distributed services + AI integrations
  • AI/ML APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.)
  • AWS (we're cloud-native + AI-ready)
  • Docker + Kubernetes (because we scale intelligently)

The Real Talk

  • Small teams, big AI-amplified impact — no corporate BS
  • You'll work directly with founders and PMs on AI product strategy
  • We believe in AI-assisted crush lists, not Jira hell
  • Opportunity to work in-person with your team in Westwood, LA — there's magic to building AI products in person. Let’s hang.
  • We move fast with AI copilots and don't break (too many) things

The Future We're Building

We believe AI will ensure our manufacturing sector grows, universities run smoothly, and hospitals deliver consistent care. You'll help us build that future.

Our Industrial IoT and AI-first software helps maintenance and facilities teams streamline work, predict failures, and act faster—with real-time insights and automation at their fingertips.

We’re building for the deskless workforce—the essential workers who keep our physical world running—and arming them with the tools they deserve.  In a world re-shoring manufacturing, accelerating automation, and embracing AI at scale, we’re riding the next macro wave—and leading the transformation of legacy maintenance into intelligent operations.

Backed by $50 million from Insight PartnersEmergence CapitalMucker, and Y Combinator, we're not just building software.  We're defining a new category for the built world.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
