About the Role

The Staff Accountant is responsible for preparing and maintaining financial records to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. This role involves performing general cost accounting duties, maintaining the general ledger, and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Staff Accountant will also be responsible for coordinating with external auditors, filing tax forms, and managing the purchasing and invoicing systems. 

A successful individual will be detail-oriented, demonstrate exceptional organizational and communication skills, act tactically, write effectively, and display strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Our ideal candidate must be able to thrive in a fast-paced multitasking environment, who easily adapts positively to change and rapid company growth.

This role is expected to work in our office in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, NYC, for at least two (2) to three (3) days a week. 

Key Responsibilities

  • General Accounting: Perform general cost accounting and related duties for the organization, including preparing monthly balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements. 
  • Ledger Maintenance: Maintain the general ledger by coding invoices, setting up new accounts, reconciling accounts, and closing the monthly books. 
  • Bank Reconciliation: Reconcile bank accounts at least monthly, verify deposits, and address inquiries from banks. 
  • Account Reconciliation: Reconcile cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; manage accounts receivable collections. 
  • Accounts Payable: Verify and/or complete the payment of invoices associated with accounts payable, ensuring payments are charged to the appropriate accounts. 
  • Audit Support: Provide assistance to outside auditors by gathering necessary account information and documents to perform the annual audit. 
  • Tax Compliance: File tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies, ensuring timely and accurate submissions. 
  • Software Coordination: Coordinate with software vendors to maintain accounting software systems and recommend updates to enhance the accounting software. 
  • Purchasing and Invoicing: Manage the purchasing and invoicing system, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. 
  • Compliance and Procedures: Maintain knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures, ensuring adherence to GAAP. 
  • Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance. 
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in Accounting.
  • Knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting principles, with an understanding of how to apply them within an organization.
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the ability to adhere to these standards in all financial reporting and processes. 
  • NetSuite experience would be ideal, but any ERP exposure is beneficial.
  • Experience with any AP solutions (e.g., Bill, Deel, Ramp, etc.) would be a plus as well.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software, as well as accounting software, enabling efficient management of financial data and reporting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, essential for collaborating with team members, vendors, and external auditors.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in all financial records and transactions.

Salary Range

Employees new to UPSTACK typically come in at the start of the pay range. UPSTACK focuses on providing a simple and transparent pay structure, which is based on a variety of factors, including location, experience, and job-related skills. 

The salary for this role ranges from $65,000 to $75,000 per year.
