Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Fiber Optic Process Engineer to support development of fiber optic termination, polishing, testing, and qualification processes. In this hands-on role you will develop and validate manufacturing-ready processes, direct technician work, analyze test data, and coordinate cross-functional activities to meet customer requirements and project timelines.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop optical connector termination, polishing, and testing processes
- Lead technician-supported testing, data collection, analysis, and documentation activities
- Iterate on processes and product designs using engineering analysis, test results, and technician feedback
- Collaborate with design, applications, product management, and development teams to drive product improvements and meet customer needs
- Determine cost-effective process approaches that satisfy internal and external specifications
- Maintain project schedules, provide regular status updates via meetings and written reports
- Prepare statistical analyses, charts, and technical reports for manufacturing, product managers, applications engineering, sales, and customers
- Provide technical support to product managers, sales, and manufacturing as needed
- Develop supplier relationships and coordinate supplier input for process or material improvements
- Oversee routine laboratory equipment repair and calibration coordination
- Train technicians on processes and equipment; maintain process and training documentation
- Draft technical conference papers and maintain documentation for potential patent submissions
Must Haves
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Materials, Mechanical, Chemical, or related technical field preferred
- 3–5 years of experience in fiber optics or telecommunications development, testing, or manufacturing (co-op experience counts)
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to lead technician-level activities with minimal supervision
- Strong data-analysis skills and familiarity with basic statistical techniques for process control and reporting
- Proficient with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and comfortable creating technical charts and reports
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an emphasis on concise technical reporting
- Hands-on experience with fiber optic assemblies, connectors, termination, polishing, and testing preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across R&D, product, manufacturing, and supplier teams
Equipment Experience
- Optical test equipment and optical power meters
- Fiber termination and polishing stations; microscopes and vision measurement systems
- Environmental chambers and interferometry equipment
- Precision gauging tools (calipers, micrometers) and PC-compatible lab systems
