Machine Learning Intern (Dawn Rollocks)

San Mateo, California, United States

About the Team

PlayStation isn’t just the Best Place to Play — it’s also the Best Place to Work. We’ve thrilled gamers since 1994, when we launched the original PlayStation. Today, we’re recognized as a global leader in interactive and digital entertainment. The PlayStation brand falls under Sony Interactive Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation.

At the forefront of innovation for PlayStation, the Gaming Developer, Future Technology Group is dedicated to creating immersive and unforgettable gaming experiences. The Anomaly Detection focus team is developing cutting-edge technologies that can automatically detect bugs and glitches in games – at various stages, from game development to certification to compatibility testing. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a global effort, making game QA more efficient and positively impacting the experiences of millions of players.

What You’ll Do

As an intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience with advanced AI and machine learning techniques while working on real problems in gaming technology. You’ll be part of a collaborative research team, contributing directly to projects that push the boundaries of automated QA. Your responsibilities will include:

  • AI/ML Model Development: Assist in the development and post-training of vision-language models (VLMs) for game scene understanding and anomaly detection.
  • Research and Innovation: Explore contrastive learning, self-supervised learning, and state space models to build strong game scene representations for bug/glitch detection.
  • Multimodal Alignment: Contribute to research on combining vision and language for better understanding of games and automated QA.
  • Prototyping: Help design and test new AI-based methods for anomaly and glitch detection within PlayStation environments.
  • Collaboration and Creativity: Work closely with engineers and researchers, join team discussions, and share creative ideas.

Through these experiences, you’ll strengthen your technical research skills, gain exposure to practical applications of AI in gaming, and see how innovation moves from concept to prototype in a world-class environment.

What We’re Looking For

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field, with graduation expected between December 2026 and Spring 2027.
  • Strong foundation in machine learning, computer vision, or natural language processing.
  • Proficiency in Python programming and familiarity with modern ML libraries.
  • Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Coursework or prior experience in areas such as self-supervised learning, contrastive learning, state space models, multimodal AI, or vision-language models is a plus.
  • Understanding of data analysis, signal processing, or statistical modeling is desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, and ability to work collaboratively as part of a research team.
  • Interest in gaming, game engine, or the intersection of machine learning and game technology is highly desirable.

What You’ll Gain

  • Practical experience applying machine learning research to game technology challenges.
  • Exposure to multimodal AI methods and advanced model architectures.
  • Opportunities to explore innovative approaches to anomaly detection in gaming.
  • Mentorship from experienced researchers and engineers.
  • A deeper understanding of how AI can transform game development, testing, and player experiences.
