Electrical Power Engineer

Hawthorne

About Valar Atomics

At Valar Atomics, we're redefining what's possible in energy. Our mission is to make clean, high-temperature nuclear power scalable—unlocking abundant energy for industry, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing. We are a team of builders, engineers, and operators who believe nuclear energy should be fast to deploy, factory-made, and built for the real world. Our first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power the future. Joining Valar Atomics means becoming part of a company where autonomy, ownership, and impact exist at every level.

The Role

We're seeking an Electrical Power Engineer to design, analyze, and support industrial power distribution systems within our plant and facility. This role focuses on the safe and reliable design of electrical infrastructure supporting motors, drives, transformers, switchgear, and critical power systems. You'll be a key contributor to delivering electrical infrastructure that supports both reactor operations and supporting plant systems, working closely with controls, mechanical, and operations teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design plant power distribution systems, including one-line diagrams and load calculations.
  • Size and specify transformers, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, motor starters, and UPS systems.
  • Perform power system studies, including short-circuit, protection coordination, arc-flash, and grounding.
  • Support equipment procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Ensure designs comply with NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and applicable utility requirements.

You Will Be Successful in This Role If

  • You bring strong technical judgment to power system design, balancing reliability, safety, and cost across the plant.
  • You apply codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, NFPA) fluently, treating them as engineering foundations rather than checklist exercises.
  • You read and develop electrical drawings and specifications confidently, and translate between design intent and field execution.
  • You communicate clearly with procurement, construction, and commissioning partners to keep installations on plan.
  • You exercise sound judgment in the field and surface issues early when something doesn't match the design or the standard.
  • You take ownership of documentation quality, recognizing that accurate records are the foundation of safe operations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with industrial or commercial power systems.
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and equipment specifications.
  • Familiarity with power system analysis tools such as ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • PE license or progress toward licensure.
  • Experience in industrial, process plant, or power generation environments.
  • Experience with arc-flash studies and protection coordination on greenfield facilities.
  • Commissioning and startup experience on new electrical infrastructure.
  • Exposure to nuclear, advanced energy, or other safety-critical industries.

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement

Valar Atomics is an equal opportunity employer. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status under applicable law.

We are committed to providing a workplace free of discrimination and harassment and will provide reasonable accommodation as required by law.
