About Valar Atomics
At Valar Atomics, we're redefining what's possible in energy. Our mission is to make clean, high-temperature nuclear power scalable—unlocking abundant energy for industry, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing. We are a team of builders, engineers, and operators who believe nuclear energy should be fast to deploy, factory-made, and built for the real world. Our first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power the future. Joining Valar Atomics means becoming part of a company where autonomy, ownership, and impact exist at every level.
The Team
As part of the Regulations & Safety organization, Quality Assurance establishes the systems and standards that ensure products and processes consistently meet the highest levels of quality and compliance. The team promotes continuous improvement and operational excellence across the company.
The Role
As a Production Metrology Technician, you will support calibration and measurement system integrity for HTGR reactor component and fuel-related production activities. This role sits within the Torrance manufacturing and fuel fabrication environment.
This role executes the day-to-day work of the calibration program under the direction of the Production Quality Metrology Engineer: calibrating and maintaining gauges and instruments, tracking calibration due dates, coordinating outsourced calibration shipments, and supporting Gauge R&R and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) studies. You will work closely with Production Quality Technicians, Inspectors, and operators to keep the measurement tools used across the production floor accurate, traceable, and ready to use.
This is a hands-on technical role. You will spend significant time directly on the production floor and in the calibration area, handling precision instruments, running calibration checks, and troubleshooting measurement equipment issues in real time.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine calibration and verification checks on production measurement and test equipment against traceable standards.
- Maintain the calibration schedule and master equipment list, tracking due dates, out-of-service tags, and calibration history for all covered instruments.
- Coordinate outsourced calibration activities, including shipment, receipt, and certificate filing for equipment calibrated by external vendors.
- Support the Production Quality Metrology Engineer in executing Gauge R&R studies and other Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) activities.
- Identify and tag out-of-tolerance or malfunctioning equipment, and support investigation of measurement impact on previously accepted product.
- Maintain calibration records, certificates, and standards traceability documentation to ensure completeness, accuracy, and audit readiness.
- Assist Production Quality Technicians and Inspectors with proper use, handling, and care of dimensional and functional measurement equipment.
- Support setup and troubleshooting of CMMs, optical comparators, and other precision measurement equipment used on the production floor.
You Will Be Successful in This Role If
- You are highly detail-oriented and take pride in disciplined, accurate calibration work.
- You are comfortable working with precision instruments and learning new measurement technologies.
- You keep records organized and complete even when the calibration schedule is full.
- You communicate clearly with operators, technicians, and engineers about equipment status and measurement limitations.
- You are willing to ask questions, learn from experienced personnel, and continuously develop technical capability.
Basic Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification in metrology, calibration, or quality a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret basic engineering drawings, specifications, and calibration procedures.
- Familiarity with dimensional inspection equipment (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.) and standard measurement techniques, or willingness to learn.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational discipline for tracking calibration schedules and records.
- Comfortable working within active manufacturing environments including exposure to industrial noise, fabrication-related fumes, and changing operational conditions while following all safety protocols.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to work within digital documentation and record management systems.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Prior experience performing calibration, metrology, or precision measurement work in a manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with CMMs, optical comparators, or other precision measurement equipment.
- Experience with calibration management software or master equipment list systems.
- Experience working in nuclear, aerospace, semiconductor, defense, or similarly regulated manufacturing environments is a plus.
- Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI/NCSL Z540, or similar calibration standards.
