Director of Engineering

Remote - US

Valimail is seeking a Director of Engineering who combines deep technical expertise with the ability to lead high-performing teams across application development, platform infrastructure, and shared services. Reporting to the VP of Product, you will help shape and scale our engineering organization while staying close to the code and technical decisions that underpin our mission-critical email authentication platform.

This is not a traditional people-management-only role — it’s designed for a technical leader who wants to stay deeply involved in the engineering craft. The ideal candidate has a strong background as an engineer and technical leader with experience building and operating distributed systems and working hands-on with technologies like Ruby, Go, SRE practices, and/or cloud infrastructure. This role would be a great fit for someone who thrives in roles that balance technical depth with strategic oversight.

You’ll mentor engineers, set architectural direction, and build a culture of speed, quality, and continuous improvement. You should be excited to engage in architectural decisions, contribute to complex problem-solving, and collaborate closely with engineers. At the same time, you'll play a key role in shaping the structure, culture, and operational maturity of our growing engineering organization.

Frequently cited statistics show that women and underrepresented classes will only apply to roles if they feel they meet 100% of the qualifications. At Valimail, we encourage you to break through that statistic. Roles evolve over time, especially with innovation, and you may be just the person we need in the future. NO ONE ever meets 100% of the qualifications. We hope you're open to learning new skills in order to grow with us. Make our team, your team!

What You'll Be Doing

Technical & Innovation Leadership

  • Contribute to architectural planning, deep-dive on technical design decisions, and unblock complex engineering challenges.
  • Maintain a strong connection to code, systems, and tools, providing hands-on guidance when necessary.
  • Ensure systems are scalable, secure, and reliable to support our global customer base.
  • Promote a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and assess their relevance to our stack.
  • Create space for innovation and new ideas within the engineering org.

Strategic Alignment & Communication

  • Translate business strategy into actionable engineering plans and execution priorities.
  • Partner closely with R&D leadership to evolve Valimail’s platform and technology vision.
  • Influence broader company decisions with technical insight and engineering realities.
  • Serve as a trusted partner to product, design, and business stakeholders.
  • Communicate technical direction clearly across audiences — from engineers to executives.
  • Ensure visibility and transparency around engineering progress, blockers, and outcomes.

Departmental & Operational Excellence

  • Lead a team of ~15 engineers across web app, platform, and shared tech (cloud, database, site reliability engineering).
  • Scale the engineering organization in line with company growth including hiring, onboarding, and career development.
  • Foster a strong, inclusive engineering culture that encourages collaboration, growth, and excellence.
  • Improve processes for delivery, quality, and incident response.
  • Implement and evolve Agile and DevOps practices to drive efficient, resilient development.
  • Ensure engineering practices support both speed and long-term maintainability.

About You

  • 10+ years of engineering experience, including time as a senior technical contributor and 2 – 4+ years in an engineering leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated success leading teams building distributed systems, SaaS applications, or cloud infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one of our core tech areas: Ruby, Go, SRE practices, AWS/Azure.
  • Deep technical judgment — you can challenge assumptions, design for scale, and stay hands-on when needed.
  • Strong communicator capable of simplifying complex ideas and building trust across functions.
  • Experienced in hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers at different stages of their careers.
  • Comfortable working in an agile, iterative environment where speed and business impact matter — but not at the expense of quality.
  • Committed to diversity, inclusion, and fostering psychological safety within engineering teams.

Why Join Us?

  • Highly competitive pay + participation in employee stock option plan. The anticipated salary range for this role is $220,000 - 250,000 and will also include a bonus plan of $20,000 - $30,000. You will also be able to participate in our equity incentive plan.  Actual title and compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, + vision coverage

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
