Senior Staff Data Scientist, Computational Biology
About Us
Valo Health is a technology company that is integrating human-centric data and AI-powered technology to accelerate the creation of life-changing drugs for more patients faster. Valo was created with the belief that the drug discovery and development process can and should be faster and less expensive, with a much higher probability of success. We are using models early to fail less often, executing clinical trials to add valuation to the company, and generating fit-for-purpose data to feed back into Valo’s Opal Computational Platform™ as we reinvent drug discovery and development from the ground up. Disease doesn’t wait, so neither can we.
We are a multi-disciplinary team of experts in science, technology, and pharmaceuticals united in our mission to achieve better drugs for patients faster. Valo is committed to hiring diverse talent, prioritizing growth and development, fostering an inclusive environment, and creating opportunities to bring together a group of different experiences, backgrounds, and voices to work together. We achieve the widest-ranging impact when we leverage our broad backgrounds and perspectives to accelerate a new frontier in health. Valo seeks to become the catalyst for the pharmaceutical industry and drive the digital transformation of the industry. Are you ready to join us?
About the role
We are looking for a computational biology (or related fields) Senior Staff Data Scientist to help represent the translational data science team in inter-disciplinary target validation efforts. A successful candidate would be adept in using and developing reusable computational approaches aimed at deriving insights from drug discovery data sources (e.g. omics, genetics, pathways, EHR, RWD, etc.), and be able to communicate and represent translational data science in integrated drug development teams.
What You’ll do ...
- Represent, advise on, and lead computational biology and data science efforts for several cross-functional drug target validation programs.
- Individually contribute code and collaborate with other data scientists using R or Python.
- Consolidate results from a diverse array of data spanning real world data, genetic data, and multi-omics data, aimed at informing target validation efforts.
- Collaborate with internal and external world-class drug discovery experts to help ensure the relevance and impact of the insights generated by you and your teammates.
- Be comfortable with scientific uncertainty and embrace curiosity and creative solutions. Many of the challenges we’re trying to address don’t have simple solutions or clear processes to arrive at answers.
- Use your technical knowledge and intuition to articulate and help scope the work needed.
What You Bring...
- PhD degree with 5-8 year of relevant experience, or MS with 8+ years of relevant experience in computational biology, systems biology, molecular biology & computer science, or related fields.
- At least three years of pharma or biotech industry experience.
- Proficient in Python or R and comfortable with using Jupyter notebooks or R-studio on cloud-based Linux systems.
- Ability to scope and design work proposals for computational biology approaches that address specific research questions.
- Strong communication and presentation skills to represent translational data science in multi-disciplinary cross-functional teams.
- Experience with integrating evidence from diverse data sources (at least three of below are expected), including:
- Public resources including literature, knowledge bases, pathways, etc.
- Omics data including RNAseq, Proteomics, metabolomics, etc.
- Genetic data including GWAS, PheWAS, Mendelian randomization, polygenic risk scores, etc.
- EMR, EHR, or RWD
- Large consortia efforts or biobanks like the UK biobank
- Experience with two or more data-relevant computational biology or statistical approaches including differential gene expression, pathway enrichment, clustering/subgroup identification form RWD data, genetic association, causal inference, transcriptomics/proteomics/metabolomics analysis, epidemiology studies from RWD, etc.
- Experience in writing / developing code using version control (e.g., git)
- Curiosity and ability to continuously learn so you can better understand the perspectives of colleagues from different scientific disciplines
You may also Bring...
- Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of junior data scientists.
- Experience with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases.
- Experience in project management.
- Experience with JIRA and confluence.
- Experience working in cross-functional drug development teams.
