Principal Scientist, Cardiometabolic Diseases, Inflammation, and Obesity - Translational Biology
About Us
Valo Health is a technology company that is integrating human-centric data and AI-powered technology to accelerate the creation of life-changing drugs for more patients faster. Valo was created with the belief that the drug discovery and development process can and should be faster and less expensive, with a much higher probability of success. We are using models early to fail less often, executing clinical trials to add valuation to the company, and generating fit-for-purpose data to feed back into Valo’s Opal Computational Platform™ as we reinvent drug discovery and development from the ground up. Disease doesn’t wait, so neither can we.
We are a multi-disciplinary team of experts in science, technology, and pharmaceuticals united in our mission to achieve better drugs for patients faster. Valo is committed to hiring diverse talent, prioritizing growth and development, fostering an inclusive environment, and creating opportunities to bring together a group of different experiences, backgrounds, and voices to work together. We achieve the widest-ranging impact when we leverage our broad backgrounds and perspectives to accelerate a new frontier in health. Valo seeks to become the catalyst for the pharmaceutical industry and drive the digital transformation of the industry. Are you ready to join us?
About the Role...
Valo is looking for a Principal Scientist to play a pivotal role in executing the wet lab translational biology plans for targets that have been identified using Valo’s human-centric Opal computational platform. This position requires deep expertise in the biology of obesity and/or cardiometabolic disease ideally with additional experience in inflammation. This ideal candidate will have experience in drug discovery and a passion for translating human data insights to develop new therapies for complex diseases at the bench. In this role, you will be responsible for helping to design and execute program related translational biology plans to demonstrate in vitro/in vivo correlation including PK/PD, profiling of cells and tissues whether by omics, imaging, or other targeted and untargeted methods, and demonstration for key cellular or in vivo biomarkers. This role will be critical to build confidence in translation of candidate drug targets to diseases of interest and in supporting their progression through the pipeline. You will closely collaborate with subject matter experts, computational scientists, other wetlab biologists, and tissue-engineers. You will contribute to delivering validation data packages from your efforts and presenting to internal and external stakeholders. You will participate as a subject matter expert collaboration with Valo’s target discovery team where appropriate.
What You’ll Do…
- Develop and Execute strategies to demonstrate in vivo/in vitro correlation in cells and in various animal models.
- Work with CROs and project leadership to design and execute in vivo pk/pd and efficacy experiments.
- Design and execute experiments to confirm relevance of biomarkers for novel targets and build biomarker strategies to support program progression through various stages.
- Perform experiments and generate data in laboratory in collaboration with Valo’s tissue and cell model experts and where appropriate leveraging CROs to support ongoing drug discovery projects.
- Build functional assays in vitro and ex-vivo to enable interrogation of novel drug targets.
- Provide biology leadership on various program and project teams.
- Provide thought leadership and guidance within your project teams on obesity, T2D, Inflammation, and/or cardiovascular disease biology, staying abreast of emerging trends and advancements in the fields.
What You Bring…
- A PhD in Biological Sciences or related field with 8+ years of experience (may include postdoctoral experience; or MS with 12+ years or BS with 14+ years) and deep expertise in one or more of the following areas: inflammation, obesity, diabetes, liver biology, skeletal muscle biology, adipose tissue biology, inflammation. An ideal candidate would have experience working at the interface between metabolism and inflammation.
- Expertise with in vitro and in vivo systems and ability to work across and develop different systems as needed.
- Experience working with and managing projects at external vendors/CROs.
- Experience in preclinical drug discovery programs and with target validation projects.
- Strong oral and written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
You May Also Bring…
- Experience with immunology techniques such as flow cytometry, ELISA, MSD.
- Experience generating samples for multi-omics profiling.
- Experience with multi-cellular in-vitro systems or organoids.
