Process Engineer / Sr. Scientist – Chemical Process Development

Location: Greater Philadelphia Area (On-Site)**
Full-Time | On-Site Laboratory Role | Cross-Functional R&D

About the Role

A leading pharmaceutical research organization in the Greater Philadelphia area is hiring a Process Engineer / Sr. Scientist to support chemical process development and API scale-up. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on lab work, process engineering, and collaborating with chemists and scientists to bring new drug substance processes from bench to manufacturing scale.

You will run experiments, analyze data, use process analytical technologies (PAT), and help identify engineering solutions that make chemical processes safer, more robust, and easier to scale.

What You’ll Do

  • Execute laboratory experiments for chemical unit operations while monitoring key process parameters.

  • Work closely with chemists, engineers, material scientists, analysts, and modelers to support API development projects.

  • Characterize chemical processing equipment at different scales to identify scale-up issues and recommend solutions.

  • Develop process models to support first-principles understanding and predictive process behavior.

  • Set up, operate, and maintain PAT tools (Mid-IR, Raman, NIR, MS, HPLC, particle size, pH, conductivity, etc.).

  • Interpret experimental and PAT data to guide optimization, troubleshooting, and control strategies.

  • Record data accurately and write clear technical reports and summaries.

  • Present results at internal meetings and contribute technical input at the level of a Sr. Scientist.

  • Follow safe laboratory practices and comply with cGMP and data integrity requirements.

  • Support audits, equipment troubleshooting, and routine laboratory operations.

Who We’re Looking For

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field.

  • Hands-on laboratory or pilot-scale experience with chemical processes or unit operations.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to interpret data and communicate results clearly.

  • Comfortable working on-site in a laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using or developing Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tools.

  • Familiarity with chemical process modeling or scale-up engineering.

  • Understanding of cGMP concepts or regulated laboratory environments.

  • Experience planning experiments, documenting results, and presenting technical findings.

Why Apply

  • Work in a highly collaborative R&D setting with exposure to chemistry, engineering, PAT, and modeling.

  • Impact real drug substance development and scale-up projects.

  • Gain experience with cutting-edge analytical tools and advanced process technologies.

  • Grow into higher-level engineering or scientific roles.
