Senior Cryogenic Systems Engineer
Woburn, Massachusetts, United States
WHY VEIR?
Giving everyone in the world access to clean, reliable, affordable energy will require substantial expansion of global electricity transmission networks. VEIR is developing a new generation of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS)-based transmission lines, enabling long distance, reliable, low loss, cost–effective power transfer in far smaller right–of–ways. VEIR’s innovations overcome the main barriers to transmission expansion, enabling the world to access the very lowest cost renewable power.
The Role
VEIR is seeking a qualified Senior Cryogenics Engineer to join our Cryogenics Systems team. The Cryogenics Systems team is responsible for the development and process of all the equipment that provides liquid nitrogen to VEIR’s products. Working with a wide range of equipment and technology, this individual will be a leader in defining and designing the cooling system for VEIRs products.
In the first 3 months you'll
- Develop a strong understanding of VEIR’s technology and the fundamentals of working with superconducting cables.
- Lead the development of the cooling system design.
- Identify and specify equipment for vendor feedback and procurement.
In the first 6 months you'll
- Contribute to the commissioning of VEIR’s System Integration Test.
- Collaborate with the controls team to develop control loops for the cooling system.
- Advance early-stage designs toward product readiness.
By the end of the first year, you will have
- Successfully launch a cooling system product for data center applications and customers.
- Advanced VEIR’s overhead product design to a detailed design review stage.
- Taken full ownership of the cooling system subsystem design.
To be successful in this role
- You’ll have a strong background and fundamental understanding of cryogenics.
- You'll bring 8+ years of experience working with cryogenic cooling systems, including equipment and systems such as tanks, pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers and cryogenic machinery (i.e. Turbo expanders or compressors).
- You may have some experience with instrumentation and controls.
- You’ll have a degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering; a master’s degree is a plus.
- You’ll may have experience designing cooling systems for superconductors (this is a plus)
- You come with industry experience in industrial gas, oil and gas, or a related field.
- You’ll have experience doing modeling and analysis using process simulation tools, such as ASPEN.
- You have strong knowledge and experience working other tools, including Mathcad & MATLAB (PIPE-FLO is a plus)
- You are highly curious and solutions-oriented, and excel at deconstructing complex problems into manageable components to develop effective solutions
- You are energized by a fast-paced environment and are comfortable working with ambiguity.
- You thrive on effectively managing multiple projects with competing priorities that require making decisions under pressure and working under tight deadlines
