Mechanical Engineer - System Integration
WHY VEIR?
Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, VEIR is a U.S.-based designer and manufacturer of category-defining superconducting power delivery systems built for the extreme energy demands of the AI era. By commercializing next-generation superconducting technology into deployable, real-world systems, VEIR delivers ~10× higher power density than conventional options, enabling “speed-to-power” where incremental optimization falls short. VEIR’s initial focus is AI data centers behind the meter, with solutions engineered for repeatable deployment through reference designs and integrated controls, designed to incorporate learnings as deployments scale.
The Role
VEIR is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our System Integration & Heat Transfer team. This individual will contribute to the mechanical design and analysis of VEIR's superconducting cable and related components, supporting the development of our first major commercial products under the guidance of senior engineers.
In the first three months you will...
- Onboard into VEIR's design environment, tools, and processes, gaining familiarity with our superconducting cable architecture and related component designs.
- Contribute to mechanical and structural design tasks for low-voltage and medium-voltage superconducting system components using CAD and first-order calculations.
- Learn VEIR's engineering drawing standards and begin generating drawings for review by senior engineers.
- Support testing activities for system components, including setup, data collection, and documentation.
- Build working relationships with teammates across engineering disciplines.
In the first six months you will...
- Take ownership of defined design tasks within larger component development efforts, executing from concept through preliminary design with regular check-ins.
- Develop and iterate on CAD models and engineering drawings, incorporating feedback to meet design and fabrication requirements.
- Apply structural and thermal analysis methods to validate design decisions, escalating complex issues to senior team members as appropriate.
- Support cross-functional collaboration with the cryogenic thermal management and systems teams on integration-related design questions.
- Begin contributing to test planning and qualification documentation for assigned components.
By the end of your first year you will...
- Independently execute mechanical design tasks for assigned components, delivering designs that meet requirements and are ready for fabrication.
- Produce complete engineering drawing packages with minimal revision cycles from senior review.
- Demonstrate working proficiency in structural and thermal analysis relevant to superconducting cable components.
- Actively contribute to continuous improvement efforts within the team, surfacing design insights and proposing optimizations.
- Build credibility as a reliable contributor on the team, with growing awareness of how your component work integrates into the broader system.
To be successful in this role...
You bring:
- 0-5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a foundation in structural and/or thermal analysis.
- Proficiency in CAD tools for mechanical design (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or equivalent).
- Ability to perform first-order structural and thermal calculations to support design decisions.
- Experience or coursework in product development, including some exposure to design-through-fabrication workflows.
- Ability to generate clear engineering drawings suitable for external fabrication.
- BA/BS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar scripting tools is a plus.
- Some experience or direct exposure to high temperature superconductors (HTS), cryogenic systems, or cable systems is required. This can include academic research, lab work, internships, or early-career professional experience.
You are:
- Precise and detail-oriented, with a track record of producing accurate, well-documented work.
- Collaborative and communicative, able to clearly explain your work in writing and in team settings.
- A continuous learner who is open to feedback and eager to develop depth in a technically demanding domain.
- Motivated by results and comfortable working through ambiguity in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Organized and able to manage your own tasks and priorities with regular guidance from senior staff.
- Committed to VEIR's mission and aligned with our core values.
VEIR is committed to equal pay for equal work in its compensation practices. The base salary range for this position in the U.S. is $90,000 - $130,000 per year + equity + benefits. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications, job level, supervisory status, and location.
