About the role:
Location:
- Canada Provinces: British Columbia, Ontario, Alberta only
With Aplos, nonprofit groups of every shape, size, and mission can seamlessly run their finances and operations, manage their business and bottom line, and proactively engage their communities and donors when it matters most. We’re a remote team, spread across North America (with peers all over the world).
Aplos is the largest nonprofit & church management software on the market. We’ve served over 40,000 organizations since our inception in 2009. Our all-inclusive platform provides a dynamic CRM, fundraising & giving tools, online donations & payment processing, built-in fund accounting system, integrated payroll, email marketing, website builder, and much more.
We are seeking an exceptional Senior Software Engineer to join our Platform Team. The ideal candidate will have proven Senior level experience in software development. They will utilize their skill set to collaborate with other senior technical leaders to design and build
scalable distributed solutions, prioritizing performance, reliability and observability to ensure the customer’s user experience above all.
Aplos is evolving our engineering practice from AI-assisted to AI-native development. In this role, AI is treated as a first-class capability within the software delivery lifecycle, supporting design, implementation, testing, debugging, and ongoing maintenance. We are seeking an
engineer who already incorporates AI into their workflow — or is actively developing that capability — to deliver higher-quality software with greater velocity.
What will you be doing (your role)?
- Collaborate on designing and building high-quality architecture for core platform systems.
- Tackle ambiguous problems and define clear, robust solutions.
- Create technical designs and present them for peer and stakeholder feedback.
- Communicate complex ideas effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Prioritize work, set and meet realistic commitments, and be accountable for successful delivery.
- Adapt to and work across diverse architectures and technologies.
- Debug and contribute to unfamiliar or legacy code.
- Maintain and gradually transition legacy monolith systems to modern microservices architectures.
- Build and maintain scalable, reliable microservices and APIs.
- Use AI-native workflows to accelerate delivery while improving quality, applying strong engineering judgment and verification.
- Incorporate AI into iterative development (plan → build → test → observe → refine), including AI-assisted design exploration, implementation scaffolding, test generation, refactoring, debugging, and documentation.
- Use AI tools effectively during incident response, performance investigations, and root-cause analysis.
- Monitor, analyze, and optimize system performance and reliability.
What we’re looking for (requirements):
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years in a senior-level role.
- Expertise in high-level programming languages; Node.js required and Java a strong plus.
- Deep understanding of modern architecture patterns, including microservices, event-driven design, reactive systems, and domain-driven design.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred; GCP or Azure beneficial) and solid understanding of cloud-native design principles.
- Demonstrated experience using AI-assisted development tools as a consistent part of day-to-day engineering work.
- Strong interest in the emerging practice of AI-native software development, where AI is embedded directly into engineering workflows and not just an assistant.
- Ability to verify and validate AI output (tests, instrumentation, careful review, reproduction steps) and to recognize when AI requires more guardrails or introduces risk.
- Experience working in Agile environments, with the ability to decompose work and deliver incrementally on a schedule.
- Exceptional communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to align technical and business stakeholders.
