About the Role:
We are looking for an Engineering Manager, Turbopack, to lead and grow the team responsible for Vercel’s next-generation bundler and development engine. This role focuses on scaling Turbopack across the ecosystem, improving local and cloud performance, and collaborating closely with the Next.js and infrastructure teams to define the future of frontend tooling.
You will oversee critical initiatives, including improved startup time, framework-level integration, and developer ergonomics. Your leadership will guide a team of senior engineers building one of the most foundational pieces of the modern web stack.
What You Will Do:

- Drive technical direction and execution for Turbopack’s roadmap—from fast local development to cloud bundling and beyond.
- Partner with teams across Vercel to ensure Turbopack is optimized for the entire developer workflow, including integrations with Next.js, the Vercel platform, and internal performance tooling.
- Develop strong alignment between product, design, and engineering to ensure we’re solving the most impactful developer problems.
- Mentor and grow senior ICs, helping them expand their technical scope and impact.
- Balance product delivery with deep investments in long-term platform reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, open-source contributors, and the broader web community to inform roadmap priorities and technical decisions.
- Advocate for great developer experience across the entire bundling and dev server stack.
About You:
- Proven experience managing high-performing teams in a systems or developer tooling environment.
- Strong technical background in compilers, build systems, JavaScript/TypeScript tooling, or systems-level engineering.
- Track record of successfully delivering high-impact products in complex technical domains.
- Skilled at fostering a culture of technical rigor, thoughtful abstraction, and fast iteration.
- Deep understanding of performance optimization, dev tooling ergonomics, and the demands of frontend frameworks.
- Comfortable managing ambiguity, shaping strategy, and influencing cross-functional roadmaps.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in hybrid or distributed environments.
Bonus If You:
- Have led or contributed to open-source tools in the JS/TS ecosystem (e.g., Webpack, esbuild, Babel, SWC).
- Have worked on large-scale build pipelines, asset compilers, or code transformation systems.
- Have experience working with Rust or other systems languages.
- Have experience managing platform-level investments alongside product delivery.
- Have worked in a hybrid environment and are comfortable managing remote engineers.
Benefits:
- Competitive compensation package, including equity.
- Inclusive Healthcare Package.
- Learn and Grow - we provide mentorship and send you to events that help you build your network and skills.
- Flexible Time Off.
- We will provide you the gear you need to do your role, and a WFH budget for you to outfit your space as needed.
