Veriforce is growing!  We are seeking an experienced safety professional with a background in utilities transmission and distribution.

The HSE Specialist will communicate closely with our clients and their contractors to coordinate the administration and implementation of their safety management plan to promote a safe work environment and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

This position requires specialized technical knowledge of high voltage risk mitigation.

Your Core Responsibilities

  • Develops and recommends safety programs for Transmission & Distribution clients on industry best practices as they relate to contractor management within utilities.
  • Shares industry best practices with clients as they relate to transmission and distribution within utilities.
  • Develops documentation and templates that include the Site Safety Plan, Site Rules, Emergency Response Plans, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and Site Induction.
  • Audits contractor safety records, programs, and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Audits contractors for accuracy of reported information and compliance of policies and procedures with regulatory standards.
  • Perform gap analysis of and development of Safety Management Systems
  • Review accident/injury investigations for clients, including root cause analyses.
  • Maintains current knowledge base of existing and emerging regulations, standards, or guidance documents
  • Interprets regulatory rules or rule changes and ensure that they are communicated appropriately
  • Assists with the preparation of regulatory documents or submissions
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to environmental protection or occupational health and safety
  • Coach and mentor site personnel regarding safety practices and behaviors on an ongoing basis
  • Conduct proactive behavior-based and quality-focused field safety observations and PPE hazard assessments
  • Stays current with thought leadership and best practices for Electrical Safety and Power Generation – Collection, Distribution, Substation, and Transmission
  • Other duties as assigned

You’ll Bring These Attributes to the Table

  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in health, safety, and environmental (HSE) field roles – specific to transmission and distribution or power generation required
  • Experience performing contractor risk management activities
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent - required
  • Minimum of one (1) safety certification is preferred, examples include: Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO) Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) Safety Management Specialist (SMS), Specialist in Safety and Health (SSH), Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Undergraduate degree in in Occupational Safety & Health Management, Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene or related technical field preferred; combination of relevant experience and education considered in lieu of degree
  • 3 or more years of Renewable Energy Safety Experience 
  • OSHA 30/10 Certification
  • OSHA 500 Certification

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Documented experience with OSHA recordkeeping, reporting and Method of Procedure (MOP) writing
  • NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE 902, OSHA 1910.269
  • Helicopter usage in construction and maintenance of hi voltage T&D
  • Thorough understanding of construction and/or maintenance project management practices and procedures, specifically hi-voltage power generation and/or transmission and distribution
  • Advanced knowledge of local, federal and state regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety, and environmental
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and materials used in construction, repair, and maintenance work of the electric power transmission and distribution including protective systems and metering equipment facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with the electric transmission and distribution system, including safety and training practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving and situation analysis skills
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite programs, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to influence behavior
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of OSHA and other industry-related safety regulations
  • Must be a team player with proven ability to work with co-workers, different departments and outside contacts and maintain strong relationships
