Product Manager - Commercial Modeling & Simulation
Location: San Francisco, CA (Hybrid)
What is Verse?
Energy markets are more volatile than ever. Rapid electrification and the rise of AI are driving unprecedented demand for power, while energy costs continue to rise across the globe. For the world’s largest energy buyers, managing energy has never been more complex or more critical.
Verse helps these organizations manage complex power portfolios with confidence by unifying energy data, planning, forecasting, and operations in one tool. Our Energy Cost Intelligence platform, Aria, brings together energy, finance, and operations teams with real-time, finance-ready intelligence—replacing spreadsheets and consultants with precision across the entire energy lifecycle. Built by an expert team of energy buyers, data scientists, and engineers, Verse enables faster, smarter energy decisions that reduce risk and lower energy costs.
The Role
We’re looking for a Product Manager to own the end-to-end modeling and simulation platform for distributed storage and solar assets.
You’ll own the simulation engine that co-optimizes battery dispatch, bill savings, coincident peak reduction, and grid services revenue across multi-year project lifetimes. And you’ll own the interfaces that let Solutions Engineers generate customer proposals and enterprise energy teams validate ROI across hundreds of sites. Your platform is where messy customer data (interval load files in inconsistent formats, solar production exports, complex utility tariffs across thousands of rate schedules) gets cleaned, unified, and transformed into defensible financial analysis.
This role sits at the intersection of energy economics, data science, and enterprise product design. You’ll work closely with enterprise customers and sales teams to ensure that outputs meet the standard required to drive real capital allocation decisions. You’ll engage with Data Science to build tariff modeling, dispatch simulation, and scenario analysis capabilities. You’ll partner with Engineering to scope data ingestion pipelines, simulation infrastructure, and a UI that makes complex modeling accessible to non-technical users.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the product vision and roadmap for Verse’s commercial modeling platform, spanning data ingestion and cleaning, tariff modeling, dispatch simulation, scenario analysis, and customer-facing results visualization.
- Drive the data pipeline strategy for ingesting and normalizing customer-provided meter data across varying formats, granularities, time zones, and quality levels.
- Partner with Data Science to scope and deliver simulation capabilities including battery and solar dispatch modeling, multi-value-stream co-optimization (bill savings, coincident peak, grid services), revenue stacking, sensitivity analysis (including Monte Carlo methods), and multi-year lifecycle projections.
- Own the tariff modeling layer, working with Data Science and Engineering to build and maintain accurate representations of utility rate structures (TOU, demand charges, capacity markets, wholesale exposure) that can be applied to both retrospective bill validation and forward-looking savings forecasts.
- Scope and deliver a simulation UI that allows users to configure inputs, run and compare scenarios, save and retrieve historical results, and export presentation-ready outputs, serving both technical analysts and commercial stakeholders.
- Collaborate with commercial teams to ensure modeling outputs (proposals, financial models, before/after billing calculators, portfolio rollups) meet the rigor required to close enterprise deals and inform capital allocation decisions.
- Conduct user research with energy analysts, sales engineers, portfolio managers, and enterprise energy teams to deeply understand evaluation workflows, data availability constraints, and decision criteria.
- Write detailed PRDs with user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical specifications, coordinating delivery across Engineering, Data Science, and Design against contractual milestones.
What We're Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)
- 5+ years of product management experience building data-intensive analytics or simulation software.
- Experience building products that involve financial modeling, scenario analysis, or techno-economic evaluation.
- Strong technical foundation: comfortable with data pipelines, ETL workflows, time-series data, and working deeply with data scientists and engineers on modeling methodology.
- Experience working with enterprise customers where product outputs directly inform purchasing decisions, investment cases, or contract negotiations.
- Familiarity with complex pricing or rate structures, whether in energy (utility tariffs), financial services, insurance, or another domain where pricing logic is non-trivial to model.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience writing PRDs, presenting to executives, and translating between technical and commercial teams.
- Track record of shipping products from concept through launch and iteration in an agile environment, ideally with experience managing delivery against contractual or compliance milestones.
What Will Make You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience building sales engineering, CPQ (configure-price-quote), or proposal automation tools where product outputs are directly embedded in customer-facing sales workflows.
- Direct experience in energy or cleantech. An understanding of utility rate structures (TOU, demand charges, NEM, capacity markets), distributed energy resource economics, or wholesale electricity market mechanics.
- Experience building or working with simulation, optimization, or forecasting tools including dispatch modeling, Monte Carlo analysis, sensitivity analysis, or scenario planning platforms.
- Familiarity with solar or battery storage project economics including PPA structures, degradation curves, revenue stacking, or investment evaluation workflows.
- Background in data cleaning, data quality, or data integration products.
- Experience at early-stage startups building products from zero to one, particularly where you’ve had to balance a contractual delivery obligation with a parallel market opportunity.
- Technical degree (Engineering, Physics, Applied Math, Energy Systems) or equivalent hands-on experience.
