Director of Operations

Position Summary
The Director of Operations reports to the General Manager responsible for the site in question. The Director of Operations is responsible for managing all production activities within the manufacturing plant. This role involves leading teams, driving operational excellence, improving production efficiency, and ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards specific to aerospace manufacturing. The Director of Operations will collaborate closely with cross-functional departments such as engineering, supply chain, quality assurance, and finance to meet production targets, manage resources, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day plant operations, including production scheduling, shopfloor workforce management, equipment utilization, and maintenance.
- Ensure that manufacturing processes are aligned with the company’s goals for cost, quality, delivery, and safety.
- Track and analyze key financial metrics such as cost per unit, labor efficiency and labor absorption to optimize productivity and efficiency.
- Lead the implementation of Lean Manufacturing and other operational excellence methodologies.
- Report to work on time, follow instructions from site General Manager, interact well co-workers, understand and follow work rules and procedures.
- Optimize the use of resources, including materials, equipment, and labor, to meet production goals within budgetary constraints.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of production employees and support staff.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and employee engagement.
- Implement workforce training programs to ensure staff are proficient in the manufacturing techniques and compliant with safety and quality protocols.
- Partner with the Site Quality Manager to ensure the site operates in compliance with aerospace industry standards (such as AS9100, ISO 9001), FAA regulations, and customer-specific requirements.
- Promote a zero-defect culture by implementing quality control processes that reduce defects and improve overall product quality.
- Collaborate with the supply chain to manage procurement, inventory levels, and supplier relationships.
- Ensure the timely delivery of raw materials and components to meet production schedules, while minimizing inventory costs and avoiding bottlenecks.
- Ensure the plant operates in accordance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations, including OSHA standards.
- Promote a safety-first culture, being a leader of the site Safety Committee and participating in the daily Gemba walks as well conducting regular safety audits and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
- Ensure that all employees are trained in proper safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and environmental best practices.
- Other various duties as needed or as assigned.
Position Requirements
This position requires a minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in manufacturing operations preferably in the aerospace manufacturing and shop floor supervision. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated the following:
- Experience managing operations within a union environment and knowledge of collective bargaining agreements.
- Ability to be firm, fair, and consistent in decision-making and able to professionally provide objective feedback
- Demonstrated proficiency in leading and managing effective teams.
- Extensive knowledge of machining manufacturing processes.
- Must be knowledgeable of industry quality standards and processes.
- Must be knowledgeable of general engineering and manufacturing development processes and tools.
- Expertise in budgeting, cash management, and cost controls. Ability to capture significant savings through process improvements, innovations, and budget management.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- 5-10 years’ experience in Aerospace / Machining Manufacturing environment.
- 10+ years’ experience in a Leadership role.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required Skills
- Proficient in advanced manufacturing, assembly, general inspection and troubleshooting of process and procedures.
- Ability to read engineering drawings, schematics, and work instruction specifications.
- Advanced mechanical background with strong knowledge of historical and current assemblies and manufacturing practices.
- Excellent communication and team building skills, able to communicate effectively to all levels of the organization.
Computer Skills
- Basic computer skills – MS Office/Word/Excel and proficient with running reports from MRP and quality databases.
Pay Transparency
The salary information is a general guideline only. A wide range of factors are considered when extending an offer, such as job-related knowledge and skills, qualifications, education/training, key skills as well as market and business considerations. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
California pay range
$120,000 - $160,000 USD
