Senior Solutions Engineer (Robotic Sanding)
About Viam
Viam is building the platform that makes robotics as programmable as software. Our software allows developers and companies to configure, control, and manage physical devices—from a single robot in a lab to fleets of machines deployed in the real world.
The company was founded by Eliot Horowitz, co-founder and former CTO of MongoDB, with the goal of making it dramatically easier to build and operate systems that interact with the physical world.
Today Viam powers developers and organizations working across robotics, industrial automation, research, and connected devices. We’re a ~100-person company headquartered in New York City.
Senior Solutions Engineer (Robotic Sanding)
Location: NYC HQ (Hybrid) with Travel (~25%)
Viam is hiring a Senior Solutions Engineer to support the deployment and evolution of our surface finishing systems at customer sites in industrial environments. This role sits at the intersection of software, hardware integration, and field deployment—you’ll play a critical role in making sure our systems are working reliably in the real world, and that our customers are successful.
As part of the Solutions Engineering team, you’ll work closely with software engineers, operators, and customer stakeholders to identify problems, design solutions, and drive the iterative improvements needed to scale our robotic sanding and other surface finishing deployments. You won't just be supporting the system – you’ll be shaping it.
You’ll be:
- Owning the setup, delivery, and testing of onsite demo robots—validating performance in customer environments and capturing feedback to guide early iteration
- Supporting the configuration, deployment, and reliability of production robotic sanding systems at customer sites
- Investigating performance issues across software, hardware, and customer environments, and driving solutions in the field
- Collaborating closely with internal engineering teams to validate motion execution, sanding workflows, and system behavior
- Coordinating with Operators and customer teams onsite to keep deployments on track and aligned with expectations
- Translating real-world observations into clear, actionable feedback for product and engineering teams
We’re looking for someone who:
- Brings strong technical problem-solving skills and is comfortable debugging across layers: software, edge hardware, sensor input, etc.
- Communicates clearly and confidently with both internal teams and customer stakeholders
- Has 5+ years of experience in technical field engineering, automation deployment, robotics integration, or similar pre/post-Sales roles
- Is excited to travel (~25%) and spend meaningful time in industrial settings
- Is energized by ambiguity and enjoys getting things working in the real world
Bonus points for:
- Experience with robotic arms such as Yaskawa, UR, Fanuc, or ABB
- Familiarity with ROS, Linux, or computer vision
- Exposure to manufacturing or industrial environments with active production constraints
- Understanding of safety requirements in industrial settings, including risk assessment, safeguarding, LOTO procedures, and proper use of PPE
- Ability to contribute to early-stage design conversations around solution architecture and feasibility
The estimated salary range for this role is $165,000 - $235,000/year
