Why this role matters:
Vonage’s Legal Department is seeking an experienced Director to lead its API Legal function during an 8-month maternity leave cover. This role is pivotal in shaping the legal strategy for our fast-growing API communications division. The Director will oversee a team of attorneys and legal professionals, set strategic priorities for API contracting and risk management, and serve as a trusted partner to senior business leaders. The role involves guiding the team through complex, strategic transactions with our customers, partners, and suppliers worldwide, while ensuring that contracting processes and legal support are scalable, efficient, and aligned with Vonage and Ericsson standards.
Your key responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the API Legal team, including supervising attorneys and legal staff, setting team priorities, coaching, and supporting professional development.
- Define and execute legal strategy for the API business unit, aligning with company objectives and Ericsson group policies.
- Serve as primary legal partner to API senior sales and business executives, advising on commercial, compliance, data protection, and regulatory matters.
- Oversee high-value and high-risk customer negotiations, ensuring consistent application of playbooks and risk frameworks.
- Direct legal support for global expansion, including jurisdictional strategy for governing law, dispute resolution, and compliance with local regulations.
- Shape and improve contracting models by standardizing templates, processes, and negotiation thresholds to drive deal velocity while managing risk.
- Coordinate cross-functional approvals with Privacy, Security, Product, and group functions on bespoke provisions.
- Represent Legal in executive forums, articulating risks, trade-offs, and recommendations to senior leadership.
What you’ll bring:
Required:
- Qualified solicitor (England & Wales) with strong academic credentials.
- 10+ years PQE gained in a top law firm and/or in-house legal department (ideally in technology, SaaS, or cloud communications).
- Proven experience managing and leading legal teams in a complex, international business environment.
- Extensive expertise in commercial contracting, including SaaS, technology, and API agreements.
- Strong track record of strategic legal leadership, advising senior executives and influencing business direction.
- Experience with cross-border agreements and risk management in multiple jurisdictions.
- In-depth knowledge of data protection (UK GDPR/EU GDPR) and other regulatory issues affecting global communications technology.
- Excellent judgment, with the ability to balance legal risk and business priorities in high-pressure situations.

- Experience aligning legal operations with enterprise-level CLM tools and contract efficiency programs.
- Skilled communicator able to influence across executive, business, and technical teams.
- Comfort working in a matrixed global environment.
Where you will work:
This position offers a hybrid work arrangement based out of our London office, with the flexibility to work remotely. We are also open to considering fully remote candidates located within England.
